It's All Greek to Me!Definitions of some commonly used words in Sororities RECRUITMENT/RUSH: The activity by which the University of St. Thomas and the College of St. Catherine seek our non-Greek students to become members and the oppotunity for non-Greek members to seek out our Sorority for membership RUSHEE/RUSH GUEST: A student interested in learning more about or becoming a member of a sorority NEW PLEDGE/PLEDGE: A student exploring membership in a particular sorority before she becomes a full or active member INITATION: The traditional experience or process that brings a student from new membership/pledge standing to active member status ACTIVE MEMBER: Fully initiated member or a particular sorority/fraternity BROTHER: Term used by active members in a fraternity when referring to each other SISTER: Term used by active members in a sorority when referring to each other CHAPTER: The local group of a sorority organization LEGACY: A recruitment/rushee guest who is daughter or sister of a member in the sorority HAZING: An action taken or any situation created that produces mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. **THE UNVIERSITY OF ST.
