Windows Trips and tricks:-

Msconfig.exe:(the hidden utility)

Windows 98/ME(sorry '95 users) comes with a powerful inbuilt utility called msconfig.exe

To access this utility go to Start->Run. Simply type "msconfig"(without quotes) and you will be presented with this utility. So what does this utiltiy tough..hmm.. basically it's a utility to edit your system files...some sytem configurations. For example you might want to Disable that annoying Scandisk after bad shutdown or you might want to control the number of programs that start up with Windows and thus speed up ur booting considerably.

A word of caution : Don't mess with settings you don't seem to undertsand. Just leave them as it is, else you will end up damaging you system files and crashing windows.

Tricks:

1)To disable scandisk after bad shutdown, after running msconfig(as described above) click on the Advanced button in the window that appears. Then check the box disable scandisk after bad shutdown.

2)If you are having problems during shutdown you can resolve quite a lot of them by checking the box "Disable Fast shutdown " under the advance tab of the windows that appears after running Msconfig.

3)The most important use of Msconfig is in controlling almost all of those programs which forcefully start up with windiws and thus delat booting time and eat up ur memory and resources. To disable the programs you don;t want to run each time windows starts: go to msconfig(as described above) then click on the Startup tab and then uncheck the boxes corresponding to the programs you don;t want to start up with wiindows.Anwyay it is recommended that you keep your system tray as empty as possible for enhanced performance and stability.

NOTE:        Don't uncheck boxes corresponding to critical  programs. Moreover some programs(like real player) still start up even if u disable them form the startup. If that's the case then you should check the settings of the program and uncheck the setting where applicable. For example in this case( real player),open Real Player, click View->Preferences.Under general tab see the section of start center, click settings and uncheck the box enable start center and conform your action in the subsequent dialog box.
