WILT'S PROFILE

Wilt Chamberlin was one of the most dominant players in NBA history. His arrival into the league revolutionized the center position. His 100 point game, against the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962, is an incredible record which will probably never be broken. Wilt "the stilt" Chamberlin was born in Philadelphia, Pa on August 21, 1936. Coming out of high school, Wilt was a highly regarded player and had his choice of Universities. He decided to attend the University of Kansas, where he led the Jayhawks to the 1950 NCAA tournament finals. After which, he briefly toured with the Harlem Globe Trotters, before joining the Philadelphia Warriors in 1959. He made an immediate impact, winning both the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards in his first season, while averaging an amazing 38 points and 27 boards per game. He went on to win a championship with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1967. In 1968 Chamberlin came to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he teamed up with Jerry West to bring a championship to L.A. This was a very talented Laker's team, but their championship hopes were constantly thwarted by the Bill Russel and his Boston Celtics. However, in 1972 Wilt and the Lakers won the Championship. During this season the Lakers won an NBA record 33 straight games. Much of Chamberlin's early dominance was due to his tremendous size. But, during the later battles with Russel, Chamberlin showed he also possesed athleticism, speed and unmatched basketball skills. After 14 seasons in the NBA Wilt retired as a member of the Laker's, in 1973. Wilt Chamberlin won seven scoring titles, 2 NBA titles and was named MVP of the league on four separate occations. He is one of only two player to ever score over 30,000 points.
