Slash was born as Saul Hudson on July 23, 1965 in Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire, England. He got his nickname by a friend of the family who said "Slash was always in a hurry, zipping around from one thing to another." Slash and his mother Ola moved to Los Angeles in 1976. He had a hard time adapting to the new life and was an outsider in school.
A lot of musicians (David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Joni Mitchell and more) came to visit the Hudson home, becuase of his mother’s work as a clothing designer. Slash has said that this time prepared him for the stress in the music business.
Slash moved in to his grandmother when his parents separated in the mid-1970's. He started riding BMX at this time.
He got his first guitar (with only one string) from his grandmother. Slash soon abandoned the bike for the guitar. He played 12 hours a day, which of course wasn’t helping him in his scoolwork, but he gained respect from the other kids for it.
He dropped out of school in the eleventh grade.
Eventually Slash met Steven Adler, a drummer who also lived with his grandmother, in 83-84 and they formed the band Road Crew. Slash putted out an ad in the Recycler for a bass player and got an answer from a Duff McKagan. Duff joined Road Crew which later would split up and become Hollywood Rose, which also split up and fused with the singer Axl Rose, and rhytm guitarist, Izzy Stradlin on June 6 1985.
Slash started taking heroin during Guns early years. After the Rolling Stones shows in late 1989 he started thinking about what he was doing. He went to rehabilitation-clinics three times during ’89 - ’91.
In October 1992 Slash married Renee Suran.
After the never-ending UYI tours Guns recorded "The Spaghetti Incident?".
Since he’s a workaholic, Slash wanted to make a small club tour, but Axl didn’t, so Slash started recording some of his own material written for Guns along with a lot of new material. He formed the group Slash’s Snakepit together with Matt Sorum, Gilby Clarke, Mike Inez and Eric Dover. Their album, "It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere" was released on February 14th 1995. They did a tour at small venues (Sorum & Inez was replaced by Brian Tichy & James Lomenso on the tour).
Another sideproject started to take form when he was invited to play at a blues concert in Hungary, mid-1996. The invitation led to the cover-band Slash’s Blues Ball, among others featuring Guns tour-harmonica player Teddy Andreas on vocals. They toured at clubs all over the US, from the fall of 1996 till the fall of 1997. At the time for the ending of the tour Slash separated from Renee.
In 1998 the new Snakepit started to take form. It took until a surprise gig at the Barfly in Los Angeles on November 25, 1998, before it was known who all the members were. New drummer was Matt Laug, bassist was Johnny Griparik, Ryan Roxie played guitar and the new singer was an unknown guy called Rod Jackson.
This new line-up did a mini-tour in Mexico and California in February 1999. It included six gigs. Go here for some reviews from the tour. They played some new songs that will be on the new album. They also played "Mr Brownstone, " which was the first time Slash had played a GN'R song outside GN'R. Other from that they did a couple of covers.
They did a second mini-tour from March 20 to May 2 which included gigs in Hawaii, Florida, Texas and California. Before, between and after the small tours they worked on an album. At first it was going to be released during the fall of 1999 but it was postponed until March 2000. Then, in the end of February 2000, Slash left Geffen Records (that now had been bought by Interscope Records) because he didn't feel that Interscope could give the new Snakepit album the right promotion
