He was trained at the Carthaki Royal University; he got above basic training, but not by very much. He went there when he was eight to learn control, and then again when he was 12 to learn more.
Family: All of his immediate family lives in Carthak, (his parents and sister) but he has various cousins and other relatives throughout Tortall, like most who live there. He doesn't keep in contact with any of them, but regularly writes letters to his parents (especially when he's low on funds) and sister. They'll send him the money, but sometimes only if he promises he'll come to visit soon.
He used to be very close to his sister (called Selianne), but as he got older they grew apart. They used to understand each other perfectly, but as he grew to love magic even more, they talked less and less. Selianne also attracts many young men, which displeases Sulak. He does however respect her enough not to say anything, and had to resist on several occasions from saying something very smart. He loves his parents a lot, and sometimes even sends home money for 'early midwinter presents.' His mother is Elanal, and his father Marcis, both regular, book loving, people. Ask them almost any question, and they could answer it.
Appearance: Red/brown hair, taller than average (not something you'd notice though), very muscular because he lifts sand-weights (like most mages, quite vain), with brown eyes. Sulak thinks he is above weapons, and sand-weights are easier. He has the Gift, so he thinks he doesn't need anything else. Anyways, it takes more money to buy a weapon, and then he might have to pay for training...
Clothing: Normal work clothes (breeches, white shirt). He doesn't like to dress his rank, because when buying in the market, most sellers jack up the price for nobility, and even if it is only a noble's difference in coin, he doesn't like to be cheated. His only sign of wealth is a ruby pendant he keeps hidden in his shirt, it reminds him of home, because it's from his parents. The pendant is charmed to grow warm when it detects poison, something he did himself after Elanal and Marcis sent it to him. As it's not too expensive, there are many of the more expensive poisons it can't detect, but what person would use expensive poison on him?!
Personality: He is normally very calm; he learned long ago that a tantrum doesn't do him any good. Mages learn to be disciplined, so he can control his magic. He also likes to be busy, and is rarely seen idle. Sulak thinks people who fear magic are fools, and doesn't like to have anything to do with them if possible.
He does like pretty girls a lot, and will flirt for fun.
Sulak is very far from believing life is all work and always puts away time for fun. While he tries not to spend too much money on fun, sometimes he does go a bit overboard on gambling, but never much. There is always a private stash of gold crowns hidden in his bed between his mattresses. He is very soft hearted and will occasionally sneak crowns to beggars in the market. If someone happens to see him do this though, his selling day is made very hard though, so it's not a usual habit. After a hard day of haggling with hard-eyed merchants, he curses himself for stupidity, and sometimes even has to move places in the market (again).
Sulak is ambitious almost to a point of fault. He's gotten in trouble a couple times because he was after gold, and once because he was looking up an illegal spell that, once he found it (and was caught by the Provost Guard), didn't want to give up.
Strengths: He is quite a muscular man, and most would not like messing with him physically, and he can take care of himself magically. He does know a lot about everything, though; he loves to read. He has a thirst for knowledge, like many mages. Ask him something about Tortall, Carthak, or almost any country discovered, and he'll defiantly know it. If he doesn't know it, he'll research it feverishly until he does, but that is rare these days.
Weaknesses: Sulak (as mentioned earlier) can be stubborn. He doesn't like to admit he's wrong. When he's wrong he acts as if he wasn't, and won't admit it. No one's ever forced him to admit he's wrong either, so he thinks ignoring someone is a good solution. (He's ignored people for up to a week after being wrong.)
Cannot stand spiders. Absolutely despises them. Though he does respect most forms of life, so he prefers not to go out of his way to kill them. Instead he keeps his living quarters sparkly clean. When he's in company, and happens to spot a spider, he'll move it with his Gift outside.
History: He's lived in Carthak all his life and has only recently moved to Tortall to increase his funds, which in turn would increase his pocket money. He doesn't really consider his past interesting, but it can be. His mother has a very small gift, so he often wonders how he ended up with such a big one. He doesn't know this, but his gift comes from the thin Bazhir line of his family. The Bazhir was one that lived in Persopolis. Sulak's ancestor was visiting a friend there that worked for the governor of the city. He supposedly fell in love with the Bazhir woman whose father was against her marrying a Tortallan. The two ran away and got married; the woman had an abnormally strong Gift, and they were quite fruitful the rest of their lives. Sulak's ancestor took the girl's name because her father was looking for him... to most likely kill him. So, they did the then unthinkable and he took her name.
What is your character most ashamed of? He hates the Carthaki robes his mother sent with him from Carthak! In Carthak they would be used for celebration, so they're very brightly colored. He blushes very deeply whenever they are brought up in conversation, and does an extremely good job of hiding them deep within his clothes chest. He sometimes feels a bit guilty because he never wears them, but he always reminds himself he has a reputation to uphold.
What makes your character unique? His background makes him very unique compared to most other Tortallans, along with his strong Gift. Some people fear him because of his Gift, while others despise him. Because of this, he's learned to handle situations that are tough well, and doesn't mention he is Gifted unless in situations where he's with a fellow mage, or he has to admit it. Most people don't care about someone with the Gift, so he gets on fine.
Why is your character coming to the Inn? He came to the inn because he heard from a palace guard (when talking about places in Corus to stay,) that it wasn't reputed for being a respectable place, and he thinks he might be able to sell some of his wares there, such as poisoned goblets and other things that a regular assassin might want. Also, he knows there is always something to learn from expert law-breakers, even though he has no direct proof anyone at the inn is, and the guard could have been gossiping; he's willing to take chances.
