While at Bia National Park in 1998 I used GPS technology to track the movements of the large and growing population of forest elephants there.  Due to excessive deforestation in the buffer zone surrounding the park, elephant movements had begun to infringe on village farms and even villages.  This incresase in human-elephant interactions is dangerous and prompted the Wildlife Division of Ghana to learn more about the areas that forest elephants traveled and at which boundary points they were leaving the reserve.
