From Tasuki no Miko's manga translations, Watase Yuu spoke thus
regarding Mitsukake:
"A quiet man, with an unchanging facial expression. On the
surface you may think he's hard to get to know as he is
unsociable, but really he's just shy and doesn't know how to
express himself. His weakness is animals and sick people. And
also children. Has a very good bedside manner and would probably
sacrifice himself to take care of others. A calm and kind man.
Even now he holds feelings for his dead lover inside his
heart."
My own thoughts:
Mitsukake is an incredibly loyal and noble man. He has the soul
of a true doctor; one who wants to save whoever he can at any
cost to himself. As a result, if for any reason he is prevented
from doing that, he feels a failure. This is why he retreated
from society and became a hermit, which I can understand; he
would rather not know who needs his help than try -- and fail --
to help them. I have to say, I don't feel that Mitsukake was
incredibly well developed as a character in the anime. Perhaps
there is more on him in the manga, though... I really feel for
his relationship with his beloved Shoka, but after that subplot
is over there isn't a whole lot for him to do except be strong
and silent. And make the occasional witty observation. All I'll
add here is... it must take an incredible amount of strength to
have the ability to heal and not be able to use it when it's
really needed. Mitsukake's a strong soul; a very strong soul.
