Ashitare was forced into life as a circus freak due to his frightening physical appearance; that of a dog-man. He has the ability to change fully into a wolf as well. However, Nakago rescued him from this way of life and took him on as a fellow Seiryuu Seishi. Although he is frequently kept chained up in a dark dungeon somewhere, he remains eternally grateful to Nakago for his rescue, and is eager to please his new master. After all, Nakago is only looking out for his best interests, right? Right? -_-;;;

It is at this point that we are introduced to Ashitare and watch as he ruthlessly carries out the commands of the Kutou general. While I can never excuse his actions, I can't say that I wouldn't do the same were I in his place. So... whatever....
