Here is a male cardinal. The females are duller in color. At our feeder, the female will often take food directly from the feeder's trough, while the male hops on the ground searching for seeds that have fallen. The other funny thing is that, while most other birds stay at our feeder for just a few seconds, the female cardinal will just sit at the feeder for upwards of a minute or more. If there happen to be chickadees or titmice around, they will queue up, waiting for the cardinal to leave.
