| +||+ INTRO +||+ Located in the Northern Region, about 10-12 hours from Accra, is Mole National Park. This rather large animal reserve is the best place to do a safari that's not only cheap but you're guaranteed to see animals. Regardless of its remote location, many foreigners come here which makes the park a great place to meet people from all over the world. |

Make sure before you head out on your safari that you get an armed ranger at the hotel office, because you're not allowed into the park without one.

| +||+ HOW TO GET THERE +||+
I highly recommend a trip to Mole NP if you're going to be in Ghana for more than a week. Here are some suggestions on how to get out there and where to stay:
Transportation: Mole NP is a VERY long drive from Accra, so it's best not to go if you're staying in Ghana for a short period of time. You might as well forget about taking a Tro-tro there unless you don't mind traveling for up to 3 days. STC buses will be a more comfortable trip but they'll be just as long. I suggest hiring a driver and car for the trip. The roads in the northern region are very bad and you'll be thankful to have the comfort of a car and driver (you can hire these for under $100). The ride from Accra should be around 10 to 12 hours.
If you decide to go by Tro-tro you should know that there is no direct route to Mole NP and you'll have to make several transfers. From Accra take a Tro-tro to Kumasi then from Kumasi transfer to another Tro-tro going to Tamale. From Tamale you should find a Tro-tro that will take you to Larabanga. Larabanga is a small town that's right on the entrance of the park. Find a taxi in Larabanga to take you inside the park to the hotel. Taxis should be 1,500 - 2,000 cedis (about $0.20).
Accommodation: There's a nice upscale hotel right inside the park called Mole Hotel. The hotel has a swimming pool, restaurant that serves western and Ghanaian dishes, and car and bike rentals. Hotel room prices vary, depending on whether you choose a single, double, or suite. All rooms have electric, bathrooms, fan or AC, and balconies that overlook the park. Rates shouldn't be any more than $25.
For the more adventurous there are several campsites located throughout the park. Footpaths will take you right to them. Personally, you couldn't pay me to camp out were there's wild elephants and the occasional lion! |
