Please keep in mind that when traveling to a developing country, especially if you're coming from the USA, your body will be more susceptible to getting sick from bacteria found in food and water. Americans may need a couple of days to get used to the water, since our bodies are used to the chorine and purified water found in the USA. All is needed is a couple of days to adjust. Below are a few things you may come across.

Do not become paranoid with this list. These are just illnesses that you should keep in mind. Also, depending on were in Ghana you are staying you may not get sick at all.

A must would be to check out: CDC: Health Information for Travelers to West Africa. This is a start for figuring out how and were to get vaccinations/medications needs and also explains any recent outbreaks. Use this site with with caution... it's overly paranoid!

Travelers diarrhea upset stomach and diarrhea. No Very common. If it's your very first time travelling to a developed nation you will most likely have some bout of this diarrhea. You can't escape it! You just have to let it take its course. This is for the better since afterwards your body will become accustomed to you comsuming the food and water.
Malaria Flu-like symptoms that hit you hard and fast. Also a feeling of being very weak. YES Unfortunately very common. Mosquitos carrying the virus come out primarily during dusk and dawn. Out in the rural area you MUST protect yourself against it our you'll constantly catch Malaria. Your chances of getting Malaria in the city are alot lower but you can still get it. There are several vaccinations. A list of them can be found at the CDC Health Website - West Africa. For West Africa however there are two that will work. Larium, which you take once a week, and Malarone, which you take everyday. On a personal note: Malarone is the one I took and I had no side effects but several people in my volunteer group took it as well and they all caught Malaria. We think there might be a resistance building on that one. Larium is known for it's delusional and vivid dream side effects.
Guinea Worm During the time I was in Ghana there was an outbreak of Guinea worm. However I was out in the rural area of the East Lake Volta Region. No cure. You just have to pick it out
Yellow Fever
