Tucked away in the Avantime Hills in the Volta Region is the small, remote town of Amedzofe. Known for its waterfall and Mount Gemi, this former German missionary is the tallest village in Ghana. When you first arrive you are literally walking through a cloud of mist and fog, adding to the mystery of this mountain top village. Over the years Amedzofe has developed into somewhat of a tourist attraction for backpackers. The steep waterfall and mountain hikes attract the more adventurous travels so when you do arrive in Amedzofe you will most likely be the only foreigners around for miles.
Amedzofe means "Origin of the People". Locals say that life began here and people migrated down the mountains and expanded onward. What's fascinating about his myth is that you will find wood carvings here with trees from the Garden of Eden etched into them. |

| +||+ HOW TO GET THERE +||+
If you're considering a day or weekend trip to Amedzofe here are some suggestions on transportation and accommodation:
Transportaion: Amedzofe is not particularly an easy place to get to but well worth the struggles to get there. I suggest catching a Tro-tro from Ho. Tro-tros run throughout the day, Monday through Saturday from Ho to Amedzofe. It's an hour 1/2 ride and should be around 7,000 cedis (about $0.85). There may not be a Tro-tro at all on Sundays.
If you're not able to catch a Tro-tro for whatever reason you can negotiate a taxi to take you there. Be prepared to bargain hard since many drivers may want to jack up the price since the road to Amedzofe is pretty bad. Try bargaining no more than 150,000 cedis ($17) for the driver to take you, wait, and take you back.
Accommodation: There's only one place to stay and one place to eat in Amedzofe. Many times the resturant doesn't have enough food but if you order what you want when you first get there it'll give the cook enough time to go and buy what you want and have it ready for lunch or dinner. Meals should be around 10,000 - 30,000 cedi ($1.20 - $3.50). |
