Excerpts from 'History of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan'
GEORGE BLOCK, dealer in wines and liquors, was born in Alsace, France, May 12, 1938.  Emigrated to America in 1861, and came the same year to Lake Superior, and located at Ontonagon, and only had 30 cents when he reached there; he worked in the Minnesota Mine and other places, and lived there eight years; then came to Marquette County and worked four years in the iron mines; then came to Michigamme May 1 1871, and worked at the Champion Mine, and engaged in his present business.  He built the first finished building for business in Michigamme, and since then has been successfully engaged in business here, and has the oldest saloon here; he is a member of the school board.  In 1865, he married Miss Anna Vilends, in Ontonagon; she is a native of Prussia.  They have seven children - George, John, Mary, Katie, William, Lizzie and Antoine.
