10 Golden Rules To Keeping a Caregiver

1. Be appreciative of your caregiver when it is due.  We all need job appreciation.

2. Be aware of your relationship with your caregiver.  Many parents will feel guilt or jealousy when their child is being cared for by another.  You may feel that the caregiver is privileged to care for your child, and she is, however it is never an easy or stress free job.  Be aware of the importance of her job in the community and in your childs life.

3. Be responsible.  Arrive on time and pay on time.  Your caregiver is a person with bills and outside responsibilites/commitments as well.

4. Be supportive of your caregiver.  Inform her when changes to your childs routine are being implemented.  Every child has phases where thigns don't run smoothly and this is not necessarily your caregivers fault. Discuss problems as they arise and perhaps your caregivers experience or ideas can be of assistance.

5. Be honest with your caregiver.  If there are in which you differ (i.e. toilet training, feeding, etc.) try to enlist your caregivers support rather than approaching the situation negatively.

6. Be tactful. Confrontation is not the only or best way to handle a situation. It is not conducive to a healthy future relationship to criticise the person on whom you rely for child care.

7. Be definite.  If you are not happy with the outcome of a dispute or difference of opinion then please change caregivers.  It is in the best interest of the caregiver, the parents and most definitely the children.

8. Be gracious when you are informed your caregiver is ill.  It may be most inconvenient, but we all have days where we are just not able to pull it all together and appreciate the support and understanding.

9. Be considerate of your caregiver and the other children in her care.  You might not appreciate it if another parent knowingly introduced infection into your caregivers home.  This is a time to find alternate or take a day off and stay home with your child.  If infection spreads to your caregiver this may end up with you being without care at all for more than just a day.

10. No caregiver should be expected to provide for your child things other than those agreed upon in advance.  Be generous on providing all that your child requires while at your caregivers home.
