       Directional Terms

• Cranial/Anterior - toward the head

     - Rostral - toward the nose (only applies to structures on the head)

• Caudal/Posterior - toward the tail

• Dorsal - toward the backbone (back)

• Ventral - toward the belly

• Proximal - toward the source (extremities)

• Distal - away from the source (extremities)

• Medial - toward the Median plane (see below)

• Lateral - away from the Median plane/toward the side of the body

• Median Plane - plane that divides the body into equal left and right halves

• Sagittal Plane - divides body into left and right halves that are not necessarily equal

• Dorsal/Frontal Plane - divides body into dorsal and ventral portions

• Transverse Plane - divides body into cranial and caudal portions
