Speaker Guide
The information below is from the Communication and Leadership Manual
(a.k.a. Basic Manual). Refer to this
manual for more information but note some of the meeting roles and
responsibilities have been modified to fit LOTC interests.
If you have any questions, contact the Meeting Toastmaster.
A major portion of each
meeting is prepared speeches. Members
prepare speeches based on their manual project objectives.
Preparation is essential
to success when you are the speaker
Early in the week:
- Provide the Meeting Toastmaster with an introduction.
- If you have any questions about your responsibilities contact the
Meeting Toastmaster.
Right before the meeting:
- Be sure to bring your manual and a videotape to the meeting.
- Arrive early to check the set up of the room.
- Sit near the front of the room for quick and easy access to the
lectern.
- Inform the Videographer if you want to be taped.
- Discuss your speech objectives and personal objectives with your
evaluator. Make sure your evaluator
is aware of your time limit.
- Make arrangements for other LOTC Members to help set up your
props when called on, if necessary
During the meeting:
- If you will be using props set them up while the previous speaker
is being evaluated.
- The Meeting Toastmaster will introduce you and your
evaluator.
- When introduced walk to the lectern.
- As you begin your speech, acknowledge the Meeting Toastmaster,
Fellow Toastmasters and Guests.
- When finishing your speech, never thank your audience. Simply return control of the meeting
back to the Meeting Toastmaster.
Always wait for the Meeting Toastmasters to return to the lectern,
then remove your props and return to your seat.
- During the evaluation of your speech, listen intently for helpful
hints that will assist in building better future speeches.
After the meeting:
- Collect your manual from your evaluator.
- Collect your evaluations from fellow Members.
- Collect your videotape
