How to get to Ormoc

If you are not from the Philippines, the first thing you must do is take a plane to Manila and from here take another plane to Tacloban. This is just two hours away by land to Ormoc City if you take the special L-300 surplus vans that regularly ply the Tacloban-Ormoc route. Large bus trips take as much as three hours because of several stops to pick up passengers.

You can also take a plane from Manila to Cebu. In Cebu port, there are fast ferry boats to Ormoc three times a day. The ride on normal sea conditions is only two hours.

The city of Ormoc itself is found in the northwestern part of Leyte island, Philippines. The island itself is made up of two provinces - Leyte and Southern Leyte. Leyte's capital. (For more of Leyte's history, here.) Tacloban City, is two hours away from Ormoc. The capital is an hour away from Manila by plane.

In Ormoc, there are public transportation vehicles (a mini-bus) that service the Ormoc-Danao route twice a day - once at noontime and another at 4:00 in the afternoon. (Please see map of the city.) If you take any of these trips, it will take you at least an hour to Lake Danao.

There are several vehicles-for-hire with prices ranging from P600 (for small non-airconditioned multicabs) to P1,000 or more for airconditioned vans. These prices are usually negotiable.

If you stay in one of Ormoc's hotels, the hotel staff could easily arrange to take you in the hotel's vehicle as part of your accomodation package.

Lake Danao of Ormoc City is located about 25 kilometers away from the heart of the city. It is situated in the middle of primary and secondary forest growths with an estimated elevation of about 1,000 feet above sea level. The area reserved as a national park has a total size of 2,193 hectares, but the lake itself is only 148 hectares. It is strategically located near a population center and accessible to any means of transportation.

Lake Danao has 1,471 residents comprising 282 households. Of this figure, 168 are into farming. About 44 of them are planting vegetables, 12 rootcrops, 8 abaca and only 3 plant corn. Most of the produce of the farmers are sold in the city market or traded by local buyers in the neighboring towns and cities.
