Facts and Faith: Seperation IS Necessary
The amendments of the constitution call for a separation of church and state:
that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof". Yet some people question why Evolution
can be taught in science classes, and Intelligent Design cannot be.
Evolution is a scientifically centered theory with decades of evidence supporting it.
Intelligent Design is based on faith, their "facts" from books that have been
translated over the course of thousands of years.
The separation of facts and faith is one of the most important things that we
must continue to do in our education system. Entangling them together, we will
lose sight of what both have to offer us.
Facts stem from and give back to science, a logical explanation for the things
that are around us in the universe. Without facts we would still think the
world was flat, and that the stars were just a film where they moved over, and
Earth would be like some sort of snow-globe (which are cool, but it isn't
realistic).
Faith has allowed our civilizations to rise to the glories that they have, but
they have also caused some of the worst disasters in history. Genocide and
wars have both been the result of unrestrained faith, leading to deaths on
those of many different faiths and beliefs.
Science gives us explanations of how the world and universe works. It is how
things are mathematically and logically.
Faith is necessary for human beings to survive on this planet, to believe in
something greater than ourselves that is helping (or sometimes hurting) us.
This is why science should be taught in the classroom, and faith should not be.
Evolution is science, Intelligent Design is faith; everyone should be
instructed in science, but everyone should be given their own time to find
their own faith, not have it taught to them like science is.
