Parent Assessment Information

 

Course Description:

Band is an instrumental performance ensemble.  Members of band will participate on a regular basis in large group rehearsals and rotating small group once every week.    

 

Course Content:

Band rehearsals: Students will be able to perform a wide variety of band music of varying difficulty through practice, critical listening, discussion and evaluation.

Band Portfolio: Students will be able to track their progress and evaluate through self-assessments what they might need to change or keep the same to reach their personal instrument goals. 

Lesson Attendance Preparation & Performance: Students will perform instrumental method material through active participation in discussion, evaluation, and practical application of instrument technique. 

 

Supplies: 

Please provide the following by the second full week of school. 

1.         Letter-Sized, Expandable File Folder, closed on three sides (this will hold your audio tape and all of your worksheets throughout the year so it should be wide and roomy)

2.         1 Blank 120 Audio Tape or CD

3.         Regular instrument supplies such as reeds, cork grease, slide grease, mouthpieces, etc.

4.         2 Pencils

5.         Lesson book and lesson materials from previous year

 

Concerts and Performances:

The culminating events for the course are the December, Winter and Spring concerts. 

 Every  student is required to participate in all concerts and performances.

 

Grading: 

Band Rehearsals........50%

Portfolio......................30%

Lessons........................20%

 

Objectives: At the conclusion of one year of band, students will have made significant improvements in the following areas:

        Ability to discuss a performance they have just heard.

        Ability to recommend steps towards improvement for the ensemble.

        Ability to blend individual sound with overall ensemble sound.

        Ability to behave appropriately in a concert setting.

        Ability to practice individual band parts at home leaving time in band rehearsals    

            to address ensemble musicality.

         Ability to sight read a piece of music in its appropriate style.

        Ability to tune to a stable pitch without assistance.

 

Band Rehearsal Policies:

            By the third minute of the band period, all woodwind and brass players must be seated and ready for rehearsal with the instrument completely assembled, music and a pencil on the stand and having “warmed up” by playing lip-slurs, long tones, scales or passages of the band music.  Purposeless noise- making will not be tolerated.

                        By the third minute of the band period, all percussionists must have gathered all necessary equipment and music for the rehearsal and have already set up for the first piece on the agenda.  Any remaining time is expected to be spent warming up on the instrument you will be playing first in rehearsal or on practicing scales and rudiments.  Purposeless noise- making will not be tolerated.

All band students are expected to participate appropriately at all times:

                        Discussions: Students are expected to offer thoughtful contributions to class discussions and to respect others’ right to participate by remaining quietly attentive while others are speaking.

                         Rehearsing: Students are expected to play when asked by the director and to refrain from playing any instrument and from socializing while another section is being rehearsed or while the director is speaking.

                        Listening Activity: Students are expected to follow directions quietly and attentively without distracting others during periodic listening activities.

                        Band students are expected to practice individual parts and difficult passages of the music at home to the absolute best of their abilities so that the majority of rehearsals can be spent putting the parts together, rather than practicing the parts separately.

 

Concert Policies:

    Concerts are formal events. Appropriate attire is required, so the ensemble perform as a musical unit similar to how a classical symphony would be viewed during a performance.  

        Boys: Black dress pants, white shirt, tie if possible, black shoes, black socks.        

        Girls: Long black skirt or slacks, white blouse, black shoes, tan or black pantyhose can be worn.  

Please remember deodorant, but do not overdo the colognes and perfumes. Wind players frequently use many breath of fresh air.  Please be considerate of others.
