CHAPTER 3: ONE BAD ATTITUDE

"She's too good to be true." Chris said as he sat down on the couch in Jessica's living room.
"Yeah she is." Greg agreed.
Greg, Chris, Jesse, Matt and Frankie were all hanging out at Jessica's house in the living room waiting for the girls who were making popcorn and getting Cokes for everyone. The group of seven teenagers were planning on watching I Know What You Did Last Summer and Lori, who had suggested it, was thrilled. She absolutely loved that movie, not to mention the sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
"She's probably one in a million." Frankie put in.
"She probably is." Matt said. "And what's this Justin Timberlake, Ashton Kutcher shit? Does she really think there's a guy out there like that?"
"Yeah I do." Lori said taking the empty spot next to him. "I KNOW there's a guy out there like that."
"How do you know though?" Matt asked suspiciously.
"You have to believe...and for me, I know there's a guy out there for me like that 'cuz....well, I'm not saying why." Lori said, fumbling with the last part. She really didn't want to blab her secret, which was that she had a crush on Matt. A HUGE crush on him.
"How come you can't say why?" Frankie asked looking over at her. He stopped rocking back and forth in the chair and waited for some sort of response.
"So you really think there's a cute sweet, sensitive, caring guy out there that has a personality like Ashton Kutcher?" Matt asked.
"Yeah, I do. I know there is." she said without much hesitation.
"I know who she's talking about." Chris said in a sing-song voice when he noticed that she had been staring at Matt for almost 5 minutes straight.
"You wanna tell me, 'cuz I'm like totally lost?" Matt asked. He laughed, but stopped when he realized that somebody's eyes were on him, watching him and his every move. He glanced over at Lori, but she immediately looked away and acted as if she wasn't the one staring. "Do I have something on my face Lori? Why were you staring at me?"
"No you don't have anything on your face and I WASN'T staring at you. I was staring at the wall." she said lying through her teeth.
"Oh. And um....what do you mean by the Ashton Kutcher personality?" he asked seconds later.
"He's a punk..he likes playing tricks on people and making fun of other people....he's just....I don't know....a punk." she explained.
"So you go for the skater boys?" Jesse laughed.
Lori just shrugged. "Hey, if he can make me laugh...that's a good thing 'cuz I don't laugh that much."
"Here's your soda Matt." Jessica handed him the last Coke.
"Quit staring at me." Matt said not even looking over at Lori. He knew she was staring at him.
"I wasn't staring. I was staring AT THE WALL. Don't flatter yourself Matt." Lori said dryly. Then she said, "You're such a punk."
"I wasn't....did you just call me a punk?" Matt asked.
"Oh. Um...no." Lori said quickly. "I said you're such a jerk."
"She definitely said that you were a jerk." Jessica added.
"She definitely said that I was a punk." Matt told her.
"OK. I called you a punk." Lori said rolling her eyes. "Sue me."
"I wasn't...I was just thinking." Matt admitted.
"If you were thinking that I was talking about you, you're way off." she told him.
Matt looked over at her and stared at her for a minute before finally realizing what she was talking about. She was talking about how she liked guys with a sensitive side, but yet they were punk-like. She hoped he wouldn't get the wrong idea about him being her 'dream guy'. That was the LAST thing she wanted. Or needed.
"Can we watch I Know What You Did Last Summer or are we gonna listen to Lorr and Matt fight all night?" Jesse asked in a whiny yet annoyed voice.
"Listening to them fight isn't that bad. It's kind of interesting actually." Chris laughed knowing that he sounded like an idiot.
"I wanna watch the movie. If you two don't wanna watch it you can always go in the den and talk." Greg suggested.
"And why would I want to be alone with Matt in the den?" Lori challenged Greg. She stared at him as she wondered what his answere was going to be.
"So you can talk to each other." Chris said simply. He shrugged.
"And it's already like 9:00." Jessica added. "We need to start the movie because by the time it gets over it'll be really late....it'll be after 11."
"You feel like going in the den and talking?" he asked her.
"No. I don't." she said. She put her legs on the couch and rested her head against the back of the couch and said, "I wanna watch I Know What You Did Last Summer, seeing how I'm the one who suggested it."
"We have the movie tomorrow. It's not like one-night rental thing. It has to be back by Thursday and it's only Tuesday." Matt told her. "Let's go talk in the den."
"I told you that I didn't wanna go talk." She said looking at him.
"So you really don't wanna talk to me?" he asked eyeing her.
"Just go talk to him. He doesn't bite." Chris said trying to persuade her into going into the den to be alone with Matt just to talk.
"Whatever. Fuck it." Lori said. She threw her hands up, surrendering and hopped off the couch and headed straight for the den.
"Well this is going to be quite the challenge." Matt said sarcastically. He laughed at his joke as he walked out of the living room.
