CHAPTER 9: What's Going On With Me?
Matt and Greg looked at each other and then Matt looked back at Lori to see her laying down in the seat, whispering, "Walk a mile in my shoes
Do me right or I'm through
Can't you see that
If you wanna stay around (Im telling you)
Youve got to figure me out
Take your time or you loose
This is my game, my rules
And I can see, obviously,
Baby You don't know
What It's like to be me."
"You sleeping?" he asked quietly.
"I'm just...daydreaming." she said in a whisper. She closed her eyes and she could only see one thing. She could only see Matt, the only person she'd been seeing for the past few months.
"You like her don't you?" Greg asked his friend in a whisper.
"I dunno. I..I have no clue what I'm feeling right now." Matt admitted when he turned back around. "I need to figure it out."
"How long have you known her?" he asked.
"I dunno. About an hour and a half or so." Matt admitted. "I haven't exactly gotten to know her though."
"You should get to know her, and you should figure out how you feel because if I have anything to say about it, I know exactly how you feel." Greg told him.
"How do you know how I feel?" Matt asked turning his head and looking at his friend.
"Because of the look on your face. It's just pretty obvious that you're into her." Greg shrugged.
"I dunno." Matt shrugged then looked back at Lori and turned back around. "Did you listen to what she was singing?"
"Hmm...yeah." Greg said.
"I think she was singing all those songs for a reason." Matt said. "Like..she was trying to express how she feels. It's hard to explain."
"She was singing those songs for a reason. She said that she had crushes on us...." Greg's voice drifted off when he heard Lori's voice.
"If I wasn't a celebrity
Would you be so nice to me?
If I couldn't have G's like everyday
Would you still wanna be with me?
Baby, if I couldn't buy you diamond rings
And all those other expensive things
Would you be so into me?
If I wasn't a celebrity............You can call me selfish
But all I want is your love
You can call me hopeless (hopeless)
Cause I'm hopelessly in love
You can call me unperfect
But who's perfect?
Tell me what do I gotta do
To prove that i'm the only one for you
What's wrong with being selfish?..........But my love is all I have to give
Without you I don't think I could live
I wish I could give the world to you
But love is all I have to give...........cuz your heart is safe with me
i'll never hurt you
i'll be there through everything
i won't make you cry
i know this world is cold but in my arms you'll see
that your heart is safe with me
that your heart is safe with me,safe with me
what can i do for you to understand, you're in good hands
i'll never do you wrong,do you wrong
what can i say to make your doubt all disappear
i won't let no tears get near,no baby, i'll be here." she whispered.
"Lorr..." Matt whispered softly. He repeated it a couple of times and she opened her eyes and looked at him.
The look in her eyes scared him because it was a look of love, but he didn't look away from her. He looked into her eyes and he said, "Greg needs directions."
She rubbed her eyes for a couple of seconds, adjusted to the lighting and sat up, when she realized she was looking at him the way she shouldn't be looking at him, especially seeing how she just met him almost 2 hours ago. "OK." was her reply.
Matt turned around and reclined his seat and closed his eyes. Surprising him and shocking him at the same time, her face flashed in his mind over and over again. He bolted straight up, scared of what was happening. The feeling was overwhelming.
"Matt, what's wrong dude? You're like hyperventilating." Greg said shocked.
He looked back at Lori who was watching him then turned around. He ran his fingers through his hair and rested his head back against the chair, breathing heavily. He closed his eyes and all he could see was darkness then Lorr's face flashed, scaring him. Not scaring scaring him, but scaring him in a good, happy way.
"Matt." Her sweet, angelic voice said.
He opened his eyes when he heard her voice and turned around to look at her. She put her hand on his shoulder and asked, "Are you OK?" Then she added, "You're...well, you're scaring me."
Matt looked down at her hand and surprising them both, he put his hand on top of hers. She looked down at the carpeted floor and started blushing. He stared at her when her eyes met his and said, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you." God, what's going on with me, he thought to himself. I can't like her. I barely know her. I don't even know how old she is.
"You're acting really weird." she told him.
"He acts weird all the time." Greg joked when he heard what she said.
"I just don't understand why he's acting weird all of a sudden. When he was at Wal-Mart he didn't act like this." Lori said.
"He likes you." Greg said in a sing-song voice, turning up the radio so it would drown out what he had said. He didn't want Matt flipping out on him, but Matt heard what he said. Lori was the only one who didn't.
"Shuddup dude." Matt snapped.
"It's true dude. If you didn't like her why would you tell me to shut up?" Greg challenged him.
"I hate this song." Lori rolled her pretty blue eyes and folded her arms firmly across her chest. She frowned.
"Want me to change it?" Matt asked looking back at her.
She looked at him and said, "If you want to."
"Do you want me to?" he asked again.
"Sure." she said.
Greg looked at her in the rearview mirror and mouthed, "He's crazy about you" to her. She blushed and looked away, knowing that Greg was probably making it up. What were the chances of Matt actually liking somebody like her? She wasn't exactly the prettiest girl on the planet. She had nothing on Britney Spears, Shakira, Jessica Simpson or Christina Aguilera. She did have a funny, fun-loving personality though, which she thought was pretty cool.
Lori smiled when she heard Ryan Cabera's song "On The Way Down" just start. She sang along and Matt watched her dance to the music.
She lip-synched, "Sick and Tired of this world
There's no more air
Trippin' over myself
Goin' nowhere
Waiting
Suffocating
No direction
And I took a dive
And on the way down
I saw you
And you saved me
From myself
And I won't forget
The way you loved me
On the way down
Almost fell right through
But I held onto you
I've been wondering why
It's only me
Have you always been inside
Waiting to breathe
It's alright
Sunlight
On my face
I wake up and yeah, I'm alive
'cause on the way down
I saw you
And you saved me
From myself
And I won't forget
The way you loved me
On the way down
Almost fell right through
But I held onto you
I was so afraid
Of going under
But now
The weight of the world
Feels like nothing, no, nothing
Down, down, down
You're all I wanted
Down, down, down
You're all I needed
Down, down, down
You're all I wanted
You're all I needed
And I won't forget the way you loved me
All that I wanted
All that I needed
On the way down
I saw you
And you saved me
From myself
And I won't forget
The way you loved me
On the way down
I almost fell right through
But I held onto you
Down, down, down
But I held onto you
Down, down, down
But I held onto you."
When Matt climbed out back and sat beside her, she was surprised when he took her hand and held it. He linked his fingers with hers and stared at her. As soon as she felt his eyes on her she looked out the window and tried hard not to pay attention even though she was wondering what was going on in his mind. The way he was acting freaked her out; it was puzzling. Her heart started beating faster and a bunch of big butterflies started a dance party in her stomach.
"What the hell is going on with me? I have no idea why I'm holding her hand and why I'm sitting next to her. I don't even know why I'm acting this way," he thought to himself. Then his inner voice said, You do like her! Why else would you be acting this way? Don't pretend you're not feelin' her when it's obvious that you are. Tell her how you feel. Just be honest with her. "
"Matt, why are you looking at me like that?" she asked looking at him. The look he was giving her was freaking her out.
Matt looked away and blushed in embarrassment. He couldn't believe he was being so shy all of a sudden. Usually he was up front with how he felt with girls he was into. His advice was Tell the person how you feel. What do you have to lose? Why should this be any different?
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH ME?, he asked himself.
