Poton, April 9, 1866
Dear Brother,
It was sad news to hear that father was dead and yes sad to me but still sader to have my dear wife taking from me and sader again to bury my child with her side by side they now sleep beneath the sod O pitty me will you. Tell mother I know how to pitty her. I received your letter the 7 day of April about ½ past 11 and at 12 oclock Elisa was dead and my child all that occurred the same day. Send this to mother as soon as you can. I shall be out there as soon as I can get there to get and fech her out with me to live with me at Jane. Tell Elie Cadorette the news to about his sister and tell him that his father wants him to come home. Now, Peter let my friends know this as soon as you can.

This letter was written by Augustin Lague (b. Sep 1840; d. 22 May 1914) to his step-brother Peter Lague.
They both had the same father, Jean-Baptiste Lague. Peter’s mother was Catherine Dupuis (Jean-Baptiste’s first wife), while Augustin’s mother was Monique Baril (b. 1817; d. 16 May 1897).
Augustin had received a letter from Peter about the death of their father, Jean-Baptiste (b. 28 Feb 1799; d. 03 Apr 1866), and he is writing to Peter about the death of his wife, Zoe Cadorette (d. 07 Apr 1866) and their child (perhaps both died during childbirth). They were married 24 Jan 1865.
Augustin would eventually marry again, Emilie Lamothe in 1874, and they had at least six children between 1880 and 1892. His mother, Monique Baril, would also marry again. She married Louis Lamothe (b. 1817; d. 03 Sep 1898; I don’t know the relationship to Emilie Lamothe, Augustin’s second wife) in 1874.

I think it is interesting that these "French-Canadians" are writing to each other in English, that Augustin’s brother is Peter to him, not Pierre, and that the penmanship, spelling and grammar are so good.

The transcript of this letter and the background information come to us from Albert Dauphine, who thought we’d be interested in it. Martin, who forwarded the information writes "Al Dauphine sent me a copy of a letter written in 1866 by a great uncle, Augustin Lague to his brother Peter.
It is a good example of a family "treasure" that contains and/or confirms family information.
While it is a sad story, I think it is an interesting letter for a number of reasons. It is written by someone with a French-Canadian heritage, but it is between brothers in English! Also, his brother is Peter to him, not Pierre, and it has good penmanship, grammar and spelling."

What Are Dit Names?
Back in February, Andrée sent an image of a web page that contains a wonderful explanation of "dit names." Unfortunately, the image was too big to use here. By the time I made it small enough to fit the page, the text was illegible. It sent me on a quest to find the information on the web for myself. Luckily, the image Andrée sent included the web page address. There is quite a bit of information available. The image Andrée sent can be seen online. There is also an English explanation on the Quebec and Geneology web site.
