The Lague Name
Annette started by asking the questions, and Marilyn began the discussion.
Marilyn ~ 1/2/2000:
"Very interesting Annette's questions re: the name Lageaux, Lague, etc. thru' the generations. From what you have explained re: the pronunciation, am I correct with it being La goo with the emphasis on the last letter? The "a" naturally sounded as "ah." And in my humble opinion the spelling of Claude's last name in France was the appropriate way in the beginning; having changed with the emigration to the New World where it was simpler to spell as it sounded phonetically. In your case, Martin, someone heard the sound Lahue and it stuck, is my determination. Any comments are appreciated and I will stand corrected if someone has a viable solution.
And I should add that like you Ken, I am most interested in finding more information on Claude Legeaux's life and ancestry in France; perhaps going back a generation or more. I have perused the sites as well with no further information. Of interest, I fell into my Perkins lineage through a wonderful cousin who researched back to the 1300's in England. It would be excellent if we could do the same re: Lageaux, LaGue, Lague, Lahue, etc."
Martin ~ 1/18/2000:
"I have copies of the records from Saint-Cajetan de Mansonville (1866-1992) for baptemes, marriages and sepultures. Mansonville was, and is, an important location for the Lague family, at least my branch of it. I can clearly see my immediate relatives listed as Lague, although even the Church spelled the name Lahue on occasion.
My great grandfather Leon Lague is listed, as is my grandfather, Narcisse Lague. However, when they moved to Northern Vermont (Newport), the federal census lists them as Leon Lahue and Nelson Lahue.
My uncle, Ernest Lahue, says he remembers hearing that his grandfather's name was Leon Lague in French and Leonard Lahue in English.
I can also see a couple of other families in this branch where some of the children were Lague and some were Lahue.

Andrée ~ 1/20/2000:
"Just adding my observations on the family name.
As you know I was educated and reared in the French language so quite familiar with pronunciation in French.
Lague was spelled with two dots on the u (called a trema) [Lagüe] which simply meant the letter u was pronounced and the e dropped. When I say Lague out loud it sounds like Laghhhhhu, a definite h sound in there, so its easy to see how when our ancestors crossed the border their English speaking neighbors would say Lahue.
As far as the "original" name it was Lague dit Sanscartier. I have done lots of research in official documents and sent for many copies; each family and generation chose different versions, Lague alone, Lague dit Sanscartier, even just Sanscartier. Most marriage documents show Lague dit Sanscartier. My line which went to NY used Lague and Sanscartier - can find them listed in church repertoires under both versions."
Andrée ~ 1/30/2000:
"I have sent for copies of many official original documents from les Archives du Quebec. At first the name shows up as Lague (with 2 dots over the u) dit Sanscartier until the end of the 1790's.
Then each group seems to have chosen their version - Lague only for some - or retaining the Sanscartier for others. It was never written as LaGue in Quebec, nor as Lahue. It changed to Lahue when the ancestors went to US. My NY line used all the variations, Lague, Sanscartier alone, Lahue, Layhew, Lahaie."
A note from Vicki:
As I was working on this section of the newsletter, I remembered a trip my cousin Jeanne Grandchamp (related on my mother's side) and I took to Montreal, Québec, a few years ago. It was a bus trip (from Rhode Island), and as we were heading for Montreal, riding through a rural area, I spotted a huge white silo with the name Lagüe emblazoned across it! Looks like the old spelling is still used there.

Ken ~ 1/31/2000:
Hi everyone, http://www2.biblinat.gouv.qc.ca/numtextes/ accueil.htm I would tend to rely on Tanguay as the authority although he compiled his research in the 1800's so I suppose it's possible some of his research was Ken ~ 2/1/2000: "Of course the Tanguay dictionary is online for all names, not just ours. This is the homepage for special publications at the national archive…."

[Left] From Andrée: "The top one is a contract for the construction of a barn and a house by Michel Lagu dit Sanscartier and Nicolas Lagu dit Sanscartier, brothers, to Clement de Sabrevois de Bleury, squire, of Chambly. The middle and bottom ones are marriage contracts."
