Mini Satin
Origin: USA
Weight: 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 pounds
Colors: Ruby-eyed White
Bred for: Show and Pet
The Mini Satin was produced from the Satin rabbit. Both have the recessive satin mutation, which makes the fur hair more translucent and more thin. Before the Mini Satin was being developed, there were dwarf-sized, satiny rabbits known in Europe and Aurstralia.
Jim Krahulec of Illinois obtained an ARBA certificate of development for the Mini Satin breed in 1995 and attempted to present his new breed in '98 and '99. He failed.
J. Leo Collins, who lived in Ohio, obtained his ARBA certicficate of development in '99 and made the first successful presentation of the Mini Satin four years later.
J. Leo Collins had actually began developing the Mini Satin in 1992 with show-winning white Satin rabbits and Florida Whites. He later introduced the Mini Rex, which introduced the dwarf gene. It also added texture and density to the offspring's coat to match the Satin's standard.
In February 2006, the Mini Satin was accepted by the ARBA in only the Ruby-eyed white variation. The Red, Otter, Black, Chocolate, Copper, Siamese, Chinchilla, Pointed White, and Californian varieties have Certificates of Development, and are currently being worked on.
