The first Lilacs were bred in two different countries at around the same time. The first lilac was bred in the Netherlands in 1917, but it is different from the modern Lilac. This rabbit was called the Gouda, and it is still a rabbit today (the ARBA has not recognized the Gouda.) There is another Lilac-like rabbit called the Gris Perle de Hal, which is belgian (also not recognized by the ARBA.) The first Lilac we know today was actually bred by R. C. Punnent in 1922. He crossed chocolate Havanas with blue Beverens. This rabbit was originally called the Cambridge Blue. When the British Rabbit Club recognized this rabbit, they renamed it the Lilac. The Lilac was first imported into the USA in the 1920s. The Lilac, because of its coloration, gained quite a bit of popularity. Sometime between 1939 and 1944 the National Lilac Club was formed. Lilacs have a friendly personality and a beautiful, gray-blue coat with a pinkish hue. They also have blue eyes, which isn't the most common eye color for rabbits. |
