The Checkered Giant was developed in Reinfalz, Germany by Otto Reinhardt in 1904, by crossing a Reinish Checker and a black Flemish Giant. The first Checkered Giants in America were imported in 1910. The European Checkered Giant and the American Checkered Giant are a little different in body type and markings, the European version made to be heavier, and the American version made to be racy. Because it has a body arch, the Checkered Giant is allowed to walk about freely on the showing table. |
