American
Origin: California, USA
Weight: 9-10 pounds
Colors: Blue and White
Bred for: Meat, Fur, Show, and Pet
The American was developed in Pasadena, California. It was first bred and introduced by Lewis W. Salisbury in 1917, the first variety being white. It has a long, subtle mandolin-shaped body, with Vienna, Flemish Giant, and Imperial blood. The blue variety was originally called the German Blue, but it was renamed after WWI.
The American was the first American-developed rabbit, followed by the Sivler Fox. After the development of more compact, meaty rabbits (I.E, the New Zealand), popularity of the American has dropped substantially, and it is just about completely ignored by the market as a meat or fur rabbit.
