| IS HIP HOP ART? |
||||
| Oxford dictionary defines art as the "application of human creative skill' and the "branch of creative activity concerned with imitative and imaginative designs, sounds, or ideas." Hip Hop culture consists of the four distinct, yet closely related elements of fashion, emceeing, deejaying, and graffiti. Hip Hop culture is based on the combination of the several different types of artistic and creative expressions that are found in each of these elements. Hip Hop fashion designers use their clothing as an expression of their individuality and creativity. Each urban designer must be distinct and unique in order to succeed and be recognized in the highly competitive market. Urban fashion is the "application of human creative skill" to clothing and accessories, and is clearly a form of artistic expression. Turntablism is the art of manipulating/reconstructing previously existing phonograph recordings to produce new, musically creative combinations of sounds using turntables and a mixer. Turntablists are viewed as musicians, with the turntable being the instrument. Turntablists use turntables to express their creative musical interests. In this sense, turntablism fits the definition of art provided by the Oxford dictionary, as it is a branch of creativity associated with both sounds and ideas. Graffiti is an element of the hip hop culture that exists due to the artistic expressions of individuals. Originally, graffiti was used by political activists as a creative form of rebellion against the government. Within time, graffiti evolved to include brightly colored murals, which were then often replicated in early urban fashion. The combination of these creative elements produces the hip hop culture. Each component contains uniquely artistic aspects,which when joined, create the unique art form of Hip Hop. |
