... Materials / Experemental Setup ...

Materials
  • 2 Sea Monkey brine shrimp tank kits with accessories.
  • 1 jug Triton Water Ultra Pure distilled water
  • 2 identically-sized cardboard boxes
  • 2 sheets black plastic
  • 1 Air pump with two ends
  • 1 flourescent blacklight fixture
  • 1 flourescent full-spectrum light fixture
  • 1 light/fan timer
  • Black electrical tape, and duct tape
  • 1 Intel Qx3 Computer Microscope, with a 10x setting

Experemental Setup

For the experemental setup, I set the two identical cardboard boxes next to each other on a table, labeling one "experement" for the experemental group, and "control" for the control group.

The fronts of the two boxes were cut off, to make the tanks easy to remove and replace. The openings were covered with black plastic that was secured with velcro.

A tube with holes punched in it, which was connected to an air pump, extended to each tank. The lights and pump were plugged into an automatic timer; the lights would come on and turn off at 8:00 AM and PM, while the pump would aeriate the tanks for a minute.

The tanks were secured to the bottoms of the boxes by a mechanism made from duct tape. By pulling back the tape, the tank could easily be taken out of the box.

The tanks remained in the boxes all the time, until it was time to measure. Both tanks were taken out of the boxes within a few seconds of each other, and placed back as soon as the measuring was done.
