I wrote this song for children to sing on the Summer Solstice.  It goes to the tune of "Pop! Goes the Weasel".  I recommend singing it, rather than simply reading it.  It may sound funny if you do.

This song is based on the pagan tradition of leaping over the fire.  Tradition holds that the crops will grow as high as the highest jumper can jump.

Summer Solstice Song

All around the Solstice fire,
on the longest day,
Pagan children celebrate
in a special way.

Our parents build a fire
beneath Father Sky.
He blesses it with love.
This makes the flames grow high.

Mother Earth is pregnant
Soon she'll give birth.
That is why we're dancing.
We want to thank the Earth.

Everyone's excited
because we all know
whoever jumps the highest
ensures the crops will grow.

Round and round holding hands,
Everybody dances.
No one is worried now.
We all get our chances.

All around the Solstice fire,
Pagans dance each year.
Come on and shout with us,
"Summer's Finally Here!"

Since fire and children do not mix safely, I recommend taking a cardboard box and decorating it with your children.  If the box is already decorated, cover it with construction paper and then color or paint flames on it.

Let the box represent the Solstice fire.  Dance around the box with your children and sing the song if you like.  Have each child jump over the box.  See who can jump the highest.

If you do this outside, however, please make sure to remove any big rocks or sticks in your yard that children can trip and fall on.

Have a great Summer Solstice!

Lady of the Shadows :)
