My View on Deities

I was recently asked how I could write spells and rituals calling on the Lord and Lady one day and then turn around and pray to Egyptian or Celtic Gods the next.  My reply was I believe in them all.  I don't follow any particular path.  I am a Solitary Eclectic Witch.  I see the divine in everything and everyone.  It is all around us.

In my opinion, the Great Mother, Mother of us all, is Mother Earth, Mother Nature, Gaia, or whatever name you prefer.  I don't need faith to believe and worship her.  I see her. I feel her. I can touch her. I can smell her.  She always takes care of me.  She feeds me.  She shelters me.  She brings me water to drink.  She grows plants that heal me when I'm sick.  She speaks to me with the wind and through the songs of the birds.  She is my teacher.  Even her seasons have great significance in my life.

I also believe that my Great Mother is so encompassing that she has many aspects.  The trees have great power.  The Ocean has great power.  The forests have great power.  The Mountains have great power.  Sometimes I feel more comfortable giving these powers names.  This is when I call on Gods and Goddesses that rule over them.

At other times, I call on different Gods and Goddesses because they represent certain powers that I believe are deep within myself (and in everyone.)  Ever since I have welcomed the Goddess Brigid into my life and called on her to bless my BOS, I can't stop writing, especially spells. So how could I possibly not believe in her?  She may only be the divine in myself that I have awakened, but either way, I know she guides my pen when I write.

Now you may wonder, how could I also pray to the Lord if I only believe in a Great Mother.  Well, the answer is simple and, to me, very obvious.  Most life needs a male and female to reproduce.  I realize some creatures are asexual, but they are rare.  In general, animals and even plants have a male and female and it is through their union, that life goes on.  Thus, I believe my Great Mother has a lover/husband, and he is the Father of us all.  It is only natural then to pray to both the Lord and the  Lady.  However, I must admit, being closer to my biological mother than I am to my biological father, I speak to my Great Mother more often. I also think being female makes me more comfortable with her.  Although this may be true, I always try to honor him as well.

To me, the Gods/Goddesses and My Great Mother are just as much connected as one as they are seperate.  So, as I said earlier, I believe in them all.  Mother Nature, Cerridwen, Bridget, Artemis, the Lord and the Lady - They all have a special place in my life.

Please remember this is only my view on deities.  I am not trying to convince anyone that this is what you should believe.  I am just trying to explain what I believe.

That's the beautiful thing about Paganism - I'm not wrong and neither are you.
