The Egyptian God Horus
by Lady of the Shadows
July 14th is the day that many Wiccans of the Egyptian tradition celebrate as the birth of Horus, a Sun God.
In early Egyptian history, Gods were represented as animals or plants and later incorporated human forms. Therefore, Horus is depicted as half man and half animal. His head is a falcon. The sun and moon are his eyes.
He is considered many Gods in one. The original Horus is believed to be the brother of Osiris, Horus, Seth, Isis, and Nephthys.
According to myth, Horus was conceived by Isis from the resurrected soul of her husband Osiris. He was brought up to avenge his father's murder. Once he had accomplished revenge, he became the King of Egypt.
Every pharoah therefafter was considered to be the living Horus and the throne was guarded by the Falcon's out-stretched wings. A great temple at Edfu was built in his honor.
Horus rules over prophecy, justice, success and revenge.
He can be honored in July by lighting a royal-blue altar candle and burning frankincense and myrrh.
Prayer to Horus
Great Horus, King of all Kings,
brother of Osiris, Horus, Seth, Isis, and Nephthys,
who flies like a Falcon,
I honor thee on this day with Frankincense and myrrh.
May your wings protect the innocent from persecution.
Ancient Horus, God of the sky, son of Isis and Osiris,
whose eyes are the Sun and the Moon,
I honor thee on this day with a candle.
May your light guide them in times of darkness.
