When I Am An Old Woman

When I am an old woman,
Older than I am now,
I'll take time, then,
To remember all the living
I've never done.
I'll recall all the fun things
I never did
With all the friends
I never had!

I will take the time to recall
Dim details of faces
Of lovers I never met,
The touch of their lips,
I never kissed,
The words of passion,
Never spoken!

I will try hard, to recapture
The memories
I never made,
With family,
Who may deny
My existance.

When I am an old woman,
Older than I am now,
I'll be the grandmother
I've never been,
Because, I've been so busy
Being the mother
I'm not!

I will sit in my rocking chair
Telling tales, of happenings
I've never experienced,
Over and over again,
To folks who don't
Want to hear them,
But, are too polite
To say so,
And I will watch
Their eyes wander,
And their teeth, grit
and their heads, nod,
And I will pause,
Long enough for them
To politely
Check the time,
And decry
It's time to leave!

When I am an old woman,
Older than I am now,
I will take the time,
To wonder where everyone went!
Maybe then...I will learn to knit!
When I am an old woman,
Older than I am now!
