YYH IN THE PHILIPPINES
Yu Yu Hakusho was released some time in the mid-90's on channel 13 as Ghostfighter. But it wasn't until the animation was shown in 1999 on one of the major networks, GMA-7 that it enjoyed tremendous attention from kids to young adults. The Philippine-version introduced minor changes. -- Names of the major characters were different. Yusuke ( Eugene ); Kuwabara ( Alfred ); Kurama ( Dennis ); Hiei ( Vincent ); Koenma ( Master Jericho ); Botan ( Charlene ); Genkai ( Master Jeremiah ); Yukina ( Michaela/Mikaela ); Shizuru ( Susie/Suzy ); George Saotome ( Gorio * laughs *) -- Opponents in the Sensui circle were given nicknames: Sensui ( Dark Angel ); Itsuki ( Gatekeeper ); Mitara ( Seaman ); Kamiya ( the Doctor ); Hagiri Kaname ( Sniper ); AmaNoma ( Gamemaster ); Makihara ( Gurume ) * isn't it now obvious which one i most favored? * -- Another thing was, at the beginning of the series, Kurama initially disguised himself as a woman named Denise by using a female voice ( although it was obvious to me that he is a male ). He admitted his true gender at the time he & Hiei offered their help to fight the Shiseijuu THE STORY The plot evolves around the story of a delinquent 14 yr. old, Yusuke Urameshi who was initially killed due to a vehicular accident while saving a boy. As a ghost, he met up with Botan, the spirit guide and Koenma, the prince of the spirit world (Reikai). He was then told that it wasn't his time yet and that due to his good deed, he would given a chance to live again. His resurrection, of course, came with a price. The task of protecting the human realm from the demon world was entrusted to him. For self-development and preparation for his upcoming missions, Yusuke was subjected under a gruelling instruction by the spirit light wave master, Genkai. This would lead him to discover his strength and capabilities, thus using it against all sorts of ferocious beings, from feeble Makai monsters, to powerful demons and even to some cruel humans. Like most heroes of the same genre, Yusuke has his own set of allies to fight with him. His rival turned best friend, Kazuma Kuwabara and two former youkai enemies, short, ill-tempered Hiei and smart, red-haired Kurama assisted him in battles such as their encounter with the Shiseijuu ( a group of four holy beasts headed by Suzaku-- also called Lazarus), the Ankoku Bujutsukai ( a tournament organized by a group of wealthy merchants), the Sensui and company fiasco ( an attempt to create a passageway between the demon world and the human realm) and the Makai tournament ( staged to determine the next ruler of the demon world). Almost half of the series was consumed by their battles in the Ankoku Bujutsukai and the rest were dedicated to the other tournaments. In the end, the fate of the four main characters was shown. Hiei was left in the demon world, Kurama went back to the human realm to work in his stepfather's company, Kuwabara studied in his chosen school and Yusuke finally returned from Makai to marry his girlfriend, Keiko. AUTHOR'S VIEW The entire series made use of oriental concepts and philosophies such as the existence of the other worlds among others. This is one way of portraying the rich japanese beliefs and culture which are elements commonly seen on most animes. Another point would be the amount of slapstick comedy shown. Though this one's not exactly a new ingredient, its portrayal was enough to gain favorable response. ( thumbs up to YYH dubbers!) But one thing that could probably sets Yu Yu Hakusho among the rest, is the touch of drama on each gestures and dialogues being delivered by the characters. The creators was bold enough to introduce such emotion ( cheesy as some of them may be ) in between all the violence shown throughout the series. There was no part in the whole story were friendship and love of family wasn't given importance. Such factor was depicted on Hiei's relationship with his sister; Yusuke's, Koenma's and Kurama's relationship with their parents; or even the all too mushy Yusuke-Keiko tandem. All reasons credible enough to have a lot of anime lovers ( and perhaps some anti's) go ga-ga over this animation. |
