There are actually a staggering # of chronic pain patients all over the world from all walks of life, rich, middle class and poor, from every race, so believe me when I say YOU ARE NOT ALONE! This page is new to the web but is already developing a family of new friends, Shareing and caring. The first thing to remember is that all pain patients no matter what there back ground have 1 thing in common -- PAIN -- and if you are a loved one or a friend of one of these patients you all have one thing in common also DEALING WITH THE CHRONIC PAIN PATIENT. Your love, support and point of view is always needed. There are many problems associated with chronic pain whether its cause is known or unknown and varies in severity. Depending on the severity of the pain, and each has its own set of crises or problem associated with it, all with the main route PAIN. the following is an abridged version of the life of pain as I don't want you to have to read forever, the order may vary and some may not exist but on average this is what has been found to occur by psychologist. 1.Chronic Pain can be debilitating - causing loss of employment or careers unable to be maintained, thus the economic crunch and loss of self esteem 2.The inability to perform house hold tasks -- thus depression and feeling useless begins causing feelings of isolation and then anger the EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER. 3.The patient begins to feel like their life has been invaded by the enemy and in fact it has, the enemy is PAIN. Both the patient and those that care about the patient have to confront these issues on a daily basis. In most cases the pain patient makes the loved ones feel as though they are being pushed away. The patient feels as though the loved ones just don't understand and don't know how they feel. This statement may be true but the Pain patient also needs to realise that they don't know what it is like on the other side. Loved ones get just as frustrated, careing and loving but unable to take away the pain. Because of being forced to confront all of this and having little or no communication a serious problem begins to occur. That is questioning by the loved ones. This is not done intentionally but the Pain patient with an already low self esteem and depression views this questioning as hurtful the type of questions I am refering to are: Why can't you just feel better? Maybe you are immagining your pain? You can't be in that much pain! Why can't you just live with it? These questions hurt and hurt deep! Just because there is no cure or because surgery has failed or a cause can not be defined it does not mean that there is no pain or the pain is less severe. Patients just because these questions are asked doesn't mean they don't love you, they just don't understand. Communication is important. Now on to the 9 suggestions to communicating with the pain patient. |
