Saxon Loyalty to their commanders was fierce. If their commander was killed, they would vow to kill whoever killed them. Matt has taken a little liberty with Saxon law and barbarian custom. Although Cheldric was Saxon, he was a barbarian invader at heart and he and his men followed that custom.
