After King Arthur dies at the Battle of Camlaan, Lady Guinevere recovers the sword Excalibur, the Sword of the Land, from the battlefield. Declaring herself soverign of the land she finds opposition from her own countrymen as well as the Saxons. Using Excalibur and the Ark of the Covenant, Guinevere maintains her sovereignty over the land for a while, but facing insurrection and invasion from across the sea, the forces against her were simply too powerful. Eventually abdicating the throne, she finds safety on the Island of Avalon. There she encounters a strange woman who tells her that she must bear a child and that she will only be able to breathe life into her barren womb by drinking from the Holy Grail. With that she journeys back to the mortal world, reuniting with the Knight Percival to quest for the Cup of Christ.
