Our science program is centered around inquiry based kits. There are three kits to our school year with approximately 3 months on each one. Each kit is full of hands on activities and projects that the children experience throughout those months. I like to bring my science also into my language arts program and integrate it as much as possible. Before each kit is started, a brochure gets sent home outlining the unit.

Sunshine and Shadow
This kit focuses on the properties of light and the role the sun plays in our day. Children draw shadows on the blacktop at different points of the day. They work with tracing silhouettes. There are several fun activities in this unit. We are starting off the year with this one, just in time before the cold weather comes around.
Living Organisms
This kit is a look into living and nonliving organisms around us and in our world. The children will interact with a living organism...what that is will be a surprise. This unit will be our second of the school year. Life cycles will also be a focus of this unit.
Air and Weather
This kit turns first graders into little meteorologists right before your eyes. The children track the weather here and around us. We discuss what weather symbols mean and how we get different types of weather. The children create rain gauges and keep a record of rainfall for the month. There are too many fun activities to mention. In the morning the children check a weather site online and they report their findings during calendar.
