D.E.A.R. Time
DEAR time is the time of day when we drop everything and read. We have DEAR right after lunch and it is a very relaxing, silent time when the children may choose from a variety of literature and read.
What does DEAR look like?
DEAR looks like children reading, children looking at books, teacher reading, children holding a book.

What does DEAR sound like?
DEAR sounds like whisper exchanges and pin drop voices.

Why is DEAR important?
DEAR is an essential component to our total reader's workshop. In addition to the read alouds and the guided reading, DEAR also involves good literature. The difference is that the selection of material is left to the child and there is no assessment given at this time. It develops a love of reading by modeling a quiet, peaceful setting and free choice in reading.
