The Armbrust or Keller School
Back
They had no school there all winter because no one would board the teacher, so I taught there three months for what was called the Summer Term.  I stayed at Jack Brews and rode horseback seven miles one way every day.

The parents objected to their children having an education.  So for the first week there were no pupils.  I called the county superintendent and said I would just keep going every day.  I notified the parents to send their children to school or they would be arrested, so the children started to come to school.

There were only 15 pupils at the Armbrust School, and I didnt have much trouble with them.  On the last day of school we had a picnic.  I enjoyed the horseback ride to school every day.  When it was raining I wore an old yellow slicker which the older people still remember.

At this school there was a creek and a spring so we had water for the school and the horse.  There was also a big prairie dog town and you could hear them barking during school hours.  The woodpeckers had made a hole in the wall and a swarm of bees had taken over and you could hear them buzzing all day long.  No doubt the walls were full of honey.  On the way to school there was a tall dead tree and an eagle had a nest in it.  One day I was riding home when my horse jumped and took off running.  When I got home I told Jack Brew about it.    That day I had ridden Margie, a horse originally from the Bad Lands.  Jack said that no doubt the horse had heard a rattle snake.  As a rule there werent any rattle snakes around as there were a lot of bull snakes, which rattlers dont like.
