North Dakota Native turns 100

Lottie Luella Kaylor Shipman celebrates her 100th Birthday this month.

Lottie was born on the Welo Family homestead in Velva Township on March 22, 1904.  She was born the fourth of eight children to Henry and Jemima Moug Kaylor.  In 1906 they had an auction sale and moved to Alberta, Canada, where Henry Kaylor farmed.  In the spring of 1908 they returned to Velva and bought a farm 7 � miles north of Velva.  In 1910 the survey began for the Great Northern Railroad and by 1912 the railroad was completed.  Lottie remembers the first train that went through the Surrey cutoff.

Lottie attended school at North Prairie School #1 and graduated in 1917.  She attended Velva High School graduating in 1921.  At the age of 18, in 1922, she answered an ad in the Minot Daily for a teaching position at the Dent Hill School at Willmen, North Dakota (Near Manning).  She taught school there from the fall of 1922 until the spring of 1924.  

In the fall of 1924 Lottie began teaching at North Prairie School #3.  Then on November 26, 1924, Lottie married Charles Vernon Shipman.  They farmed in North Prairie Township from 1924 until 1931 where they lived on the Pete Johnson Farm.  Then from 1931 until 1938 they farmed in Norwich Township where they lived on the Bob Dickey Farm.  Lottie and Vernon had 5 children, Wayne Vernon born January of 1926, Marvin Donald born June of 1928, Peggy Jean born May of 1930, Beverly Mae born February of 1933 and Jeanette Kathleen born February of 1936.

In 1938 Vernon and Lottie took over the Shipman Homestead and continued farming it until 1959 when he passed away.  Lottie remained on the homestead until 1998.

Lottie has been an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Granville Chapter #47 since the 1940�s.  She served as Worthy Matron several times.  She is a member of the North Prairie Lutheran Church and has always been active in the community.  In 1949 Lottie attended the inauguration of Harry S. Truman in Washington DC with the Farmer�s Union Group.
