NPC Description

Apprentices

1. Masil Trenton (30/27 C/M)

Masil is a young human, around seventeen or eighteen by the looks of her. When asked she will tell you that she was born in the city of Gaphlin, a swift growing port that thrives off a long canal leading between two inland seas. She speaks proudly of her home city, talking with respect of the noble lord who watches it. Masil herself comes off as quite the idealist. She is unwilling to believe that anyone could enjoy hurting another, and its for this very reason that she became an apprentice to an altruistic necromancer who offered his healing abilities to the town. The necromancer had himself once been a member of the Mages Guild in Rhydin, and though he never passed Hedge Wizard he decided it would be good to send Masil there that she might learn from the tomes of biology and magic they had to offer. Masils a fairly reserved girl, that is to say shes very shy around those she doesnt know, and will try to avoid talking to them unless in a situation where thats needed or called for. Once she does know someone though shes fairly easy to talk to and make conversation with. She often seems homesick, and its clear that she holds a high respect for Kiyana and her work. Looks wise, Masil is fairly small, about 53 with very light skin, blonde hair and sky blue eyes. When walking at a normal pace shes graceful, but she can be clumsy if rushed. So far Masil doesnt have many friends, keeping to herself and her work in the infirmary.

2. Nelin Fairkind (30/23 C/M)

Nelin is a human in his early twenties, a lean fellow with black hair and blue eyes as well though his are more like the color of azure. He has a very pure skin tone, the classic peach that lent his family the last name. Nelin is a very studious worker raised in a house near the temple district. His parents had big plans for him, and entered him as an apprentice in one of the temples as soon as he was old enough. But the strict religious discipline and disinterest in the religion lead him away. He joined the guild soon after and started classes, returning each night with stories about that day in the temple. Eventually his parents found out, but they allowed him to stay on so long as he resumed clerical studies. Thus Nelin works in the infirmary. Nelin is quite practical and very neutral, quick to note the flaws in any argument. His actual aspiration is to become an archaeologist, a finder of lost ruins.

3. Lordren Milnien (30/18 P/M)

Lordren is a youthful human from the High Quarter of Rhydin, probably in his mid twenties. He is also the stereotypical member of the Rhydin elite. Once upon an age his family was one of true nobility, knights protecting a small kingdom. Overtime they grew less and less noble and more and more arrogant, though they managed to somehow maintain their skills as knights of their ancestors religion. To this extent each member of the family is brought up as a paladin. However Lordrens father knew about the massive stores of knowledge contained in the Mages Guild library, and also knew how useful such information could be in pursuing business arrangements. The skills in sorcery were also enticing; Lordrens father would very much like to have a son who could detect the lie of a serf from an outlying manor who wants to skimp on his taxes. Lordren is pale skinned with platinum blonde hair and green eyes. He is fairly arrogant in speech and manner, and only talks to those he considers lesser when he has to. The only people he will listen to are the Guilds elder members, and then only because he must in order to remain in their good graces. He has a few friends though not many in the guild, mostly because the other apprentices are too intelligent to be manipulated.

4. Halfrin Bowrider (35/17 F/M)

Halfrin Bowrider is a young human from the dock quarters, dark skinned with blue eyes and curly black hair. Had he been told earlier in his life that he was a mage, and would become a member of the guild, he would have given a swift punch to the person who said it. His father is a ships hand and his mother cooks in a tavern for sailors. Halfrin grew up around boats, and in an area where magic is not trusted very well and generally associated with arrogance. As soon as he was old enough Halfrin was put to work on the boats with his father, trimming sails and working the rigging. During this time Halfrin earned himself quite a reputation. The sailors, who were often suffering from cabin fever, would hold fights on deck and place bets on them. Halfrin, who spent much of his time loading cargo, was quite strong and became one of the big names in the floating fights. He was making out rather well for a sailor, so the discovery of his magical abilities wasnt a welcome one. His father knew, and tried to help him harness and hide the powers as best he could. In the end though his talents were noticed by an astute captain who watched Halfrin keep the lanterns lit despite a heavy storm. Luckily for Halfrin the captain was not only kind but well endowed also, having turned fair profits from trading. The Captain spoke with his parents and offered to sponsor the boy into the guild, an offer which his parents were quick to accept. Halfrin has grown accustomed overtime to the guild and is actually quite friendly and very fun loving. He is a little sensitive and not the brightest of the bunch, and if angered he will fight. Halfrin has a dislike of nobility, gained through a combination of meeting various high quarter residents at the docks and having to deal with noble passengers from time to time. However this young human is truly known for his appetite. Hurricane Halfrin, as he has been named, can sweep the dining hall of its entire contents in the seconds before the meal begins. At least so go the rumors. Halfrins goal is to learn about navigation and the mechanics of ships, as he himself hopes to one day be a captain.

5. Silyin Firedance (30/23 M/T)

Silyin is a half-elf, with dark red hair that seems almost black in the shadows and yet glistens like flame in the sunlight. Her skin is tan but fair as though the tan has always been the color of her skin. Though Silyin is not the most enthusiastic student of the guild she gets by, responding to training and orders for the sake of her parents. Before coming to the guild recently Silyin was a member of her family troupe, which went from town to town entertaining. At one particular stop Silyin became very engaged in a dance, and it was soon noticed that Silyin was actually dancing on fire. It swirled about her and yet didnt harm her at all. Her family, being very suspicious of such blatant sorcery made a decision. After they had performed in Rhydin, they left her at the gates to the guild with her luggage and rode off. Arrangements had been previously made for her. For now, the golden eyed being bides her time learning the new dance of magic as she waits for her training to end. When shes done she has planned to seek out her parents again and rejoin the act.

6. Jola Amphily (33/20 R/M)

Jola is a . . . well no one is really so sure what she is. At first she was thought to be of Elven blood, but that was later discovered to be untrue. Her skin is almost golden; the iris in each of her eyes is silver. Her hair is silver as well, as are her lips and fingernails, and strange markings on either side of her face. Whether this is natural or intentional no one knows except Jola herself. The only fairly certain is that she is sylvan, a creature of the woods. Jola shows a remarkable talent for magic, and yet she also seems to have an innate kinship with any animal she encounters. As for her structure Jola is built as any small elf with one notable exception. Her eyes are elongated, but wider then any elfs. It seems almost odd to see such eyes on a small face. When asked of her past Jola either seems to not hear the question or not understand it. Why shes come to the guild is anyones guess. She adapted very readily though and took to guild life with excitement. Jola is constantly happy and fun loving, though she seems to have the innocence and naivety of most children. The only time she is notably opinionated is when she sees an animal being mistreated. For a short while she will become very aggressive, though when its over shell deny knowing anything about it.

7. Andrew Galewind (30/27 D/M)

Andrew is a human, born and raised in the slums that exist outside the Rhydin City walls. The tough life is a fairly good way to describe his childhood; its well known that nothing comes easy in the slums. It didnt help any that Andrew never was the strongest of the bunch, and he was often singled out to be the target of beatings and robbing. Andrews handsome features, brown hair and hazel eyes, only served to compound his problems. The only good fortune Andrew has had in life is to have once done an errand for a mage passing through, and to receive from that mage a small spell book as payment. Andrew took to it with more ease than anything he had previously attempted, and he soon discovered somewhat related magical talents. A pity for his former bullies though, they found out that hard way that Andrew had learned to control certain weather conditions. Many of those who live in the slums do not have last names as they see no need for them, and Andrew was no exception. However as his strength in magic grew he came to be known as Andrew of the Galewinds because of his ability to make frigid winds frost any that tried to attack him. Eventually he chose to head into the city and to seek out further training, applying to the guild under the name of Andrew Galewind. He is tall and wiry, and though not extremely strong physically he makes up for it with the cold sting of his ice. Andrew is a very skeptical individual doubting most things unless he sees them himself. Hes also very cynical, a quality he attributes to his upbringing.

8. Velia Tanlentir (30/31 M)

Velia is a youthful elf maid, having silver hair and violet eyes. She came to the guild from an Elven city in the woods, though which she will not say. She is a high elf and very proud of this fact, and for a long time had a reputation for being somewhat arrogant. Her attitude improved over time but not by much. Then there was the trip to the Hold, where she went with Master Devri to aid in the Holds defense while Valmion and his forces attacked the swamp. Upon her return other guild members were quick to notice a drastic change in her attitude. The once prideful and snide elf of the house Tanlentir had become very shy and unconfident, easily hurt by cruel words from others. Many think this to be because of what happened to her one friend Liam. It is believed by a good number that she cared for him more deeply than she would admit, and this belief is only strengthened by her frequent visits to wait by Liams side

9. Liam Kinnian (30/28 M)

Liam is a young human who immigrated to Rhydin with his parents when he was just a young boy. His parents had both been educated in the past, his father took up a job with the city library and his mother started running a business in the Merchants District. His father had once been a practicing mage, and thus his parents were not surprised when Liam proved to have the ability. He was educated through private tutors and eventually sent to the guild of magi where his education continued. He was a very skilled student, going through most lessons almost simplistically. He was also very kind and tolerant, and thus became very well liked. His most prideful moment was when Master Devri asked him to come on an expedition to defend the Hold for a short time. He did not then know what was going to happen. During the assault by the group known as The Revolution upon the Hold, Liam came across two of its members trying to escape a quickly spreading fire they had caused. Not knowing who they were he demanded they identify themselves. They rushed out of the room, and on their way one of them knocked Liam into a wall rendering him unconscious. The attackers were later caught, but due to his state he was unable to avoid the spreading flames. He was found by Velia Tanlentir, who rushed him to Devri. They in turn raced back to the guild and delivered Liam to Head Healer Kiyana Gracekind. She did her best and much of the damage was erased. However enough remained to possibly kill him, and it was damage he would have to heal on his own. The brown haired, blue eyed young man now rests in a bed in a back room of the infirmary, surrounded by a constant regeneration field placed to make sure he could not deteriorate further. Liam has not awoken yet.

10. Gabriel Casker (32/18 AP/M)

Gabriel Casker is human, a black haired youth with light skin. He has spent his life learning sorcery, and more has taken a special interest in tomes most shy from, those of shadow magic and necromancy. He took to the mages guild rather easily, treating it as just one more step in his training. He isnt arrogant but can seem cynical. In actuality Gabriel is simply a pragmatist and a realist. He believes in proven fact and not often in theory. The one marking feature about Gabriel is his eyes, or rather eye. One eye has a golden iris, and its likely the other did too. However that eye was lost to a magical accident sometime ago. Over where his right eye should be there is a golden disk. Several tiny gems are inlaid with in it, and it is inscribed with runes from an archaic language. The device seems to fit itself to his face, adapting to the contour lines of his bones. It seems to give him a different form of sight, often allowing him to see what most others cannot. Where most magi only sense the magical power in others, he can see it as a visible aura.

11. Matthias Rowson (30/26 M)

Matthias is human, raised in the dock quarters. He has brown hair and brown eyes, is very amiable and eager to please. Matthias was born into one of the better off families from the docks such being true because his father runs the largest ferry on the river, responsible for carrying many supplies and even wagons to the other side so that they can access the roads there. Once when he was young his father took him to see a pit fight. One of the combatatants was a mage and ever since Matthias saw what the mage was capable of hes been enamored with the study of magic. He began questioning passengers on his fathers ferry and overtime learned a few cantrips and minor spells. Eventually one of his passengers directed him to the guild of magi something for which Matthias has been very grateful. He was ecstatic to be accepted into the guild, and has become almost a suck up in his many attempts to please the elder members and make them proud of him. Still though somewhat nave Matthias is friendly enough, and so is tolerated.

12. Kylin Frostwalker (31/26 R/M)

Kylin Frostwalker is an elf, born in the winter woods far to the north of Rhydin. His hair is white and his eyes silver, a common feature of his people believed to help in blending with the snow. Kylin was already an apprentice druid among his own people, but he felt that he needed to travel in order to expand his knowledge of both his druidic and mage talents. Not surprisingly most of Kylins spells take the form of freezing snow or ice crystals. Kylin himself is shy but good natured. He is a little more wordy than most though hardly Master Devri. His best friend in the guild is Anwar, and currently Kylin is serving as interim gatekeeper while the young bard is away.

13. Tenzrin Virsalie (31/ 24 AP/M)

Tenzrin Virsalie hails from a grey elf city hidden somewhere beyond the mountains. Why he has come to Rhydin is anyones guess, though if asked he will explain that he has journeyed here in a search to gain a greater understanding of the other races. His friend Halfrin once phrased his view by saying, Hes come to poke and prod everyone of us and get under our skin until he can make us go nuts. His only response to the statement was to smile and laugh. Not much about him is certain, except that he is very intelligent, and understands some of the strange tongues in the dark tomes of the Guild Library. He seems fairly friendly, save that he is often sarcastic and is known to play pranks now and then. He also seems to enjoy friendly taunts, seeing how far he can push someone before they try to push back. Tenzrin has never actually fought to knowledge, but something about him suggests hed be very formidable in a fight.

Hedge Wizards

1. Gisrain Muerdhall (53/42 F/M)

Gisrain is viewed by many to be a stereotypical dwarf, save that he has no dislike for magic. Still, he has a standing distrust of the sea and flight, and is known to be down right cantankerous at times. He can also be very jovial however and enjoys a good party revealing another part of his nature as a noisy braggart. The easiest way to start the stout, white-bearded, brown eyed dwarf is to ask him about his time as blacksmith for one of the kings of the mountain kingdoms. Then Gisrain will begin on a drawn out tale of the fabulous things he created, axes that killed gargoyles, swords that killed demons and even spears used against a dragon. He is very proud of his skill in that area and will boast that there is no weapon normally made on an anvil that he cant forge.

2. Pheral Camber (49/45 R/M)

What is there to say about Hedge Wizard Camber? Ask Devri and he will merely sigh and shake his head. Ask any of her many friends and compatriots in pranks and you will hear tales of daring forays into the armory, and skilled sneaks past various wards that shouldve barred her access somewhere. She does not hide her rambunctious spirit; in fact the violet eyed half elf with the short purple hair flaunts it. However, even Devri will admit that she does get her duties done. Forgetting her tricks and cynical attitude, Devri has always counted on Pheral as an aid judging her as one of few people who could truly gauge the seriousness of some matters. This yet surprises most considering how unserious she seems. Still when Devri called upon her to aid in the defense of the Hold she went willingly pitting all her acquired skills against the fiends that tried to climb the walls. Despite all she does and how she mocks the Assistant Guild Master, it is quite clear that she holds a deep respect for him. To all others she is much more fun loving, always on the look out for a good time or a good adventure. There is little she values above friendship, and considering her popularity she must think herself rich.

3. Tiwdre Tinkermuch (44/57 M)

Tiwdre holds a very distinct title at the mages guild, being the only gnome in residence. If he knows this he doesnt show it, or possibly he just doesnt care. Tiwdre really doesnt spend thought on anything he hasnt been asked to, except his own musings and his insatiable thirst for tinkering. Tiwdre loves beyond all else to create gizmos and gadgets that dont really seem to serve a purpose, except to him. His room has been known to be home to several localized explosions, when some concoction or device he was making malfunctioned or back fired. Tiwdre is short even as gnomes go, only a little taller than a Halfling would be. He has golden hair and blue eyes, and his face is often covered with a light coating of soot. As per Devris request Tiwdre has currently added running the forge to his list of things to do. He was told it is a temporary position, but hell serve as long as needed. Tiwdre is often found wandering the halls of the guild, writing down various observations in a small notebook he keeps at his side.

Magi

1. Kiyana Gracekind (53/79 C/M)

Kiyana is one of few Halflings in the guild though she doesnt seem to mind. She is soft spoken and usually very gentle, a quality she finds helpful with her bedside manner. Her short hair is always different, seeming to switch between a deep red and a light brown depending on what kind of light she stands in. As he name indicates she is very graceful, always speaking in a fluid and easy to understand manner. If this were earth the accent to her voice would be British. She is quite cheery most of the time always ready to hear a happy thought and maintaining a smile in all but the worst of cases. Originally she entered the guild as a mage, but her studies of necromancy soon lead her to pursue healing. She was quite good at it, and over time has built quite a good base of knowledge about all things medical. Because of her kind and patient nature Kiyana is often viewed as a font of wisdom, and sought out for simple advice when an apprentice did not have the headspace to comprehend Devris riddles, or even his speech when he wasnt being intentionally puzzling. The one thing that notably concerns Kiyana is her failure to have awakened Apprentice Kinnian. She too went along on the journey to the Hold, and spent much of her time there aiding those wounded in the attack. Not once did she think shed be returning to the guild in the back of a wagon, trying to make sure Liam didnt die in transport.

2. Juerdin Dawnhammer (70/59 P/M)

Juerdin Dawnhammer is an aging and kind hearted dwarf with hair bearing every hue of fire though more golden then anything else, and soft red eyes. He gives himself a tough appearance to the guild, but most apprentices still think of him as a big softie. He has a gruff voice that speaks from a wisdom born from experience. He can be somewhat religious sometimes, but few seem to mind his devotion to the sun god Lothander. Juerdin is very strong yet, and could still wrestle a bear to the ground or tackle a half-ogre. He is also a good friend of Devris, and the one the Assistant Guild Master usually trusts to take his place while hes away. The strength of this pious dwarf was proved in the expedition to the Hold. He was the last chosen of Devris party, and the battle found him on the walls with Pheral, causing bolts of sunfire to rain from the heavens onto his foe. When asked, Juerdin will say that he hates war, considering it only to be a means towards suffering and remorse. He can often be found practicing his fighting skills in the training center, or overseeing the Watchguard from the courtyard.
