The population expanded further in the 50's as the home of the Beatniks - the 60's saw the arrival of the hippies and since the 70's the city's been home to arguably the world's most prominent gay community. This staggered growth has meant that San Francisco has quite definite district boundaries.
The famous Haight-Ashbury district, was the birthplace of the flower power movement in 1966. The hippie population grew very big in the mid to late '60's and the music of the day was Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead. It all culminated in 1967's Summer of Love when thousands converged to enjoy free everything. |
