VINTAGE JOHNNY MATHIS Jazz musician Frank Wood shares pre-recording career photos of Johnny Mathis shown with band leaders Merl Saunders,Lionel Hampton, and the Roland Mitchell. Frank sent this email: Ladylegend, The picture was taken Sept. 20,1951. I was just 18 years old. I think Johnny was 17. Helen Noga from the Nightclub Blackhawk in San Francisco took him over and was his manager for a long time. The Blackhawk is where Dave Brubeck, Cal Jader and many more became famous. You might check out the Merl Saunders web site also, he was the head of the band at that time. Merl has also worked with Jerry Garcia. I see Merl once in awhile.
