Objectives

In this semester-long project, your group will use what you already know, what you will learn, the internet, and your classmates to rationalize and design a biosphere.

• Groups will prepare a data sheet describing the basics of their biosphere and present their initial concepts to the class.
• Groups will participate in computer-based discussions during the semester utilizing concepts learned in class.
• Groups will prepare a final report of the design of their biosphere, taking into account ecological concepts and problems encountered during their investigations.

Watch the movie, Bio-Dome and think about the preparation, life forms taken, supplies stored and the problems encountered in this story.

What similarities will your biosphere have with the Bio-Dome? What differences?

The Bio-Dome was designed to house five people for one year. Your biosphere needs to house a small population for an undetermined length of time. How will this affect your choices?

• Discuss and reflect on your ideas, brainstorming creative ways to present your ideas to the class.
• Present your findings to the class for discussion and comment.

• During the semester, participate in group discussions on the electronic bulletin board below
• Discuss Biospheres in the Classroom Forum.

After learning the basic concepts of ecology and discussing ideas with your classmates, your group should have plans for a biosphere much-revised from your initial plans.

Prepare a final project report detailing your biosphere. This report should be typed and complete with illustrations where necessary.

Present your revised biosphere to the class for discussion and comment.
