Chapter Six

Kate and Robby were led down a beautiful hall to another set of large wooden doors.

“Senior, Miss Maggie and…” the man paused trying to find the right word, “friend.”

“Leave us Meguel.”  A voice came from a large leather chair that was facing away from them.  The room appeared to be a library, “Maggie, you disappointed me.  I thought after last time you wouldn’t run off again-” An older man with sun leathered skin, long black-gray curly hair and bright blue eyes, rose slowly from the chair and turned to look at them.  His voice dropped off in shock when he saw that the person he was expecting to see wasn’t there.

Kate took the opportunity of him being shocked speechless to speak herself.  “Sir, I don’t’ know who you are, or who it is that you think I am, but I was kidnapped from my friends and imprisoned against my will over-night by a group of goons and I don’t appreciate it.”  Kate kept her voice calm and even but her unhappiness was easily apparent.

The older man regained his composure and found his voice but continued to stair at Kate as if he was looking at a ghost.  “I am so sorry miss…”

Kate, and this is Robby.”

“Miss Kate, I am extremely sorry for his mix-up.  If you would excuse me for a moment I will remedy this.”  The man excused himself quickly and fled the room.

Kate and Robby looked at each other and Kate shrugged.  They waited a few minuets and when he hadn’t returned yet they began to wonder around the room.  Kate made her way over to some of the books and found most of them to be old classics.  The more she looked she started to find books in different languages, French, Spanish and Italian; but she was most surprised a section of Greek, Latin and even Hebrew.

“Kate!  Earth to Kate!”  Kate had been to lost in her discoveries that she hadn’t heard Robby calling her name the first few times.

“Huh?  What?”  Kate walked over to the desk that Robby was standing behind looking at something.

“Kate take a look at this.”  Robby had been staring in amazement at a picture.  He handed it over to Kate when she was standing next to him.

Kate couldn’t believe what she was looking at.  The picture that she held in her hands was of a young woman sitting on a house smiling brightly for the camera the kind of photo that came with frames.  But what shocked Kate was that the girl was the spitting image of herself, it was a little like looking into a mirror.

Kate’s jaw fell open and she was shocked speechless.  “Who?”  She stammered, for that was all she could manage to say.

“I’m guessing it’s Maggie.  No wonder he was speechless.  You two look exactly alike.”  Robby answered.  He had recovered from his initial shock before he had told Kate to look at the picture.

“It’s uncanny.  I can’t believe what I’m seeing.”  Kate couldn’t take her eyes off the picture. She felt like Alice peering through the looking glass.

“An understatement to say the least.”  The older man was now standing in the doorway.  “Miss Kate, I apologize for my men’s mistake. But maybe you can appreciate my situation.  My daughter, Maggie, has the habit of running off every year around this time, and if I don’t send my men to go look for her, it'’ weeks before she returns.  And when my men saw you, they just assumed…Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?”

“You can start by returning up to our friends.  Kate told him bluntly and returned the picture to its place on the table.

“Okay that is a start, where are your friends staying?”

“Better yet, why don’t I call them and we can meet them some where?”  Kate said rethinking the situation.  She didn’t trust this man and she didn’t want him to know where her and her friends were staying.

“If you would be more comfortable with that arrangement, you can use the phone on the desk.  Just press 5 before you dial the number.”  He waved his hand toward the phone on the desk.  “I’ll be right outside the door if you need anything.”

Kate picked up the phone and looked blankly at the numbers.  “You wouldn’t happen to remember Candra’s number?”  Kate hissed under her breath.

“No, but I have the card she gave us that has her number on it.”  Robby reached into his back pocket and pulled out the business card that had Candra’s address, phone number and E-mail address on it.  “Here.”  Robby handed her the card and the moment their skin touched both of them felt a jolt of electricity pass through their bodies.

“Thanks.”  Kate said a little breathlessly.  The closer they came to each other Kate felt her chest become tight and her lungs couldn’t seem to hold enough oxygen.  It was exhilarating and scary all at once.  Kate dialed the number.  A moment later Candra answered.  She was overjoyed to hear Kate’s voice.  They arranged to a place for them to meet at lunch.  Kate closed her eyes and put the phone down.  “We’re going home,” Kate sighed.

Robby sensed her exhaustion and pulled her into a tight hug.  “Yes we are.”
