CHAPTER FIVE

Time passed. Day turned into weeks and weeks into months until six months passed. The Black Where had not struck for the six months.

One day Lisa was taking a shortcut to the pub through an alley when a movement caught her eye. It was just Mono’s cat Sissy. Lisa walked over to her. “Sissy,” she scolded, “Mono’s probably worried sick about...” Lisa stopped short when she saw something that made her want to scream, cry, and run all at the same time, but she was held immobile by the sight. Right in front of her, lying on the cobble walk were three figures, eyes wide open, an unspoken scream on their lips and a look of sheer terror on their faces. She was looking into the faces of friends, Sussie, Azwald and Mono. All of their necks were purple and swollen, their head at odd angles. From each of their mouths were a few drops of blood. Lisa was frozen into place, she couldn’t move all she could do was stare.

While she stood there transfixed she noticed that Sussie’s hand was clutched around something. Lisa crouched down and reached out for her friend’s hand and tenderly opened it.

Lisa was shocked to find that Sussie was still warm, which meant that they had to have been killed in the last few minutes, which meant that they were killed during the daylight. The thought sent an unpleasant chill up Lisa’s spine.

In Sussie’s hand was an elaborate button with some black thread still attached to it. The design was in gold and placed on a black backing. The design it’s self was of two dragons with their tails wrapped around one another. The symbol of the King and Queen’s royal court. “But there are no members of the court still alive. The last one died five years ago Where could it have cone from?” these and other questions were racing through her mind when.

“Lisa? You down here?” Jonathan called down the alley. It was his voice that broke the spell that held Lisa transfixed in that spot.

Lisa sprang up and started running away from the town. She ran and ran, not knowing what she was running to but only knowing what she was running from. She was running from the sight of her friends laying there. She ran until she came to an open field. There she fell onto her knees and cried. She knew not how long she cried.
