Chapter 20
Kait sat watching the rain as it spattered against her
window. She still was having trouble
believing Luke had gone so wrong. It had
been three weeks sense he had attacked her, but in a way it still didn’t feel
real. Luke had admitted to everything; his motive the simplest thing:
jealousy. He was mad that Jonathan had
picked Kait over his sister whom he had tried to set Jonathan up with. When Jonathan told him about his plans on
proposing to Kait, he had decided that Kait was more trouble then she was
worth. He thought he had succeeded when
Kait went away for the summer. Then
Jonathan told him that he was transferring schools and he realized that his
plans on breaking them up had backfired and he needed to try something more
permanent. So he had tried to kill Kait
backstage.
Kait shuddered at the thought of how twisted Luke was
in his thinking. She sighed and turned
back to her computer, moments later she heard her door open and turned to see
Jonathan enter.
“Hey,” she greeted warmly.
“Hey to you too.” Jonathan
kissed her affectionately on the lips.
“What are you up to?”
“Nothing really, just typing a paper
that isn’t due for another week and a half.” Kait said with
a laugh.
Sounds like someone needs a break, want to go for a
walk?” Jonathan offered, softly rubbing
the tension out of her shoulders.
Kait purred in response to his sure, strong hands
banishing the tightened muscles from her neck, “A couple more minutes, okay?”
“Sure,” Jonathan started to remove his hands from her
neck and shoulders.
“What do you think you are doing?” Kait asked playfully when she felt the
wonderful pressure of his hands leave her skin.
“Letting you concentrate?” Jonathan tried.
She looked up at him and battered her eyelashes and
pouted playfully. “Okay, okay, just no
more pouting. You know I can’t refuse
you when you do that.”
“Why do you think I do it?” Kait teased.
After a moment of Jonathan giving her is “You’re a bad girl” look Kait
gave in. “Fine, let’s go for that walk.”
They made their way up the hill to a little park,
along the way the rain had stopped. Kait
shivered, “It’s starting to get a little cold.”
Kait murmured.
“Here,” Jonathan pulled Kait towards him and wrapped
his coat around her. “Better?”
“You know it is.”
They reached a little pond and Kait pulled away and
started to skip stones on the surface.
Jonathan watcher her, she was totally at peace for the
first time in a long while. He fingered
something in his pocket. “Kait?”
“Huh?” Kait kept her attention on the pond.
Jonathan walked in front of her and took hold of her
hands to still her actions.
Kait was about to ask him what he was going, but the
serious look in his eyes stopped the question on her lips. “What is it?”
Jonathan looked down at her and smiled, “Kait,” from
his pocket he pulled the little black box and went down on one knee. “Will you marry me?” Slowly he opened the box.
Kait gasped in surprise. Nestled inside was a simmering platinum ring
that mirrored her Irish wedding band, nestled in the crown were tiny sapphires
and the heart was make out of turquoise.
Jonathan looked up at her waiting for her response,
“Well?”
Kait looked from the ring to him and then back
again. Finally she was able to force the
words through her tight throat. “Yes, Jonathan, Yes!”
Jonathan jumped up and took her into his arm swinging her around. Finally he set her back down on her feet and kissed her soundly on the lips, sealing their future together.
