Chapter 17
The rest of the play was canceled and the theatre was
swarmed with police. IT felt like both Jonathan and Kait had given their
statement a hundred times each. Finally they made their way to Kait’s room,
considering the circumstances the floor advisor had given his permission for
Jonathan to stay with Kait that night.
Not that his permission meant anything, there was no way Jonathan was
going to let her out of his sight.
“Here.” Kait
tossed him a pair of sweats and a T-shirt that looked oddly familiar. “You can wear these; I doubt you want to
sleep in your slacks.”
“Where did you get these?” Jonathan asked eyeing her suspiciously.
“They’re yours.
I’ve had them sense last February.”
Kait explained. “I wore them
home.”
It took a moment but realization donned on hem. “Oh,” Then a puzzled look took over his
features again. “You’ve had them this
long? Why?” I’ve
been over dozens of times, she could have given them back, but she kept them, I
wonder why.
Kait reddened lightly.
“Well…I…uh…” What in the heck am I
supposed to say, I kept them because they smelled like you?
Well that
would be the truth, that and you like sleeping in them.
“I don’t know.
I just forgot I guess.” Kait
shrugged; well it is kind of true, I have
been meaning to give them back. “You
can change in here and I’ll change in the bathroom.” A few minutes later Kait returned wearing a
pair of flannel PJ bottoms and a tank top.
“I don’t know about you, but I’m too wired to sleep. Wanna see what’s on TV?”
Jonathan smiled, “Sure.”
Kait picked up the remote and headed over to the big
beanbag chair that Jonathan was sitting in and flopped down in his lap and
handed him the remote. “You pick.”
Jonathan looked at her in mock-surprise. “You’re giving me the remote?”
“Be quiet.” She answered ruefully. He just gave her his most innocent smiles and
turned on the TV; the first thing to come on was “Touched by an Angel.” Jonathan put down the remote. A few minutes later Kait looked up at him and
saw that he wasn’t watching. He was looking
at the screen but his eyes had a far away look to them, the look he got when he
was thinking.
“A penny for your thoughts?” Kait asked
quietly.
“Huh?” Jonathan
asked looking down at her.
“Just wondering what you were thinking.” When he didn’t say anything Kait ventured to
ask about what had happened earlier.
“What do you mean?”
Jonathan asked not making the connections.
“Up on the catwalk; you didn’t want to talk about it
then. Do you want to talk about it
now?” Kait hopped he did, it had been waiting
her up, not knowing what it was that had happened.
Jonathan hesitated as if searching for the right
words. “When I was up there and I saw
those cables giving way, all I could think of was all those times you told me
that all things were possible through God.
That and just how close I was to loosing you.” His voice faltered and he tightened his hold
around her waist needing the reassurance of her presence. He found his voice and continued. “So I did the only think I could think of, I
prayed. It wasn’t anything amazing, I
just asked for help, and I got it. Kait,
I don’t know what I would have done if I had lost you.” Tears sparked in his eyes.
Kait slipped her arms around his neck, buried her head
in his chest and hugged him tightly, needing the contact as much as he
did. “But you didn’t. I’m right here.”
“Thank God,” was all Jonathan could say, and to his
surprise, he meant it.
Getting an idea Kait sat up, “I think we should.”
“What?”
Jonathan was confused.
“I think we should thank God.” Without waiting for a response she sat down
on the floor in front of him and took his hands in hers, closing her eyes. “Dear Heavenly Father,
today had been such a trial! But you got
us through it. You protected us when no
one else could. You brought Jonathan to
me right when I needed him. Father I’m
sorry I have been so distracted, I haven’t been seeking you guidance daily, the
way I should, and the way I know to.
Lord I ask that you continue to show yourself to Jonathan the way you
did today. I also ask that you lead him
in knowledge of you and even to a relationship with you. Finally Lord I ask for your guidance in this
situation with this creep who won’t leave me alone. Please help the police to catch him. Thank you again for all you’ve done for us. In Your Name we pray, Amen.” Kait sat a moment with her eyes still closed.
I’ve prayed with Kait before, she always insists that
we pray before eating, but all those times it was uncomfortable. This time wasn’t, why?
