Chapter 3
Kait and Jonathan met at their favorite restaurant, a
small Italian place halfway between their dorms. The waitress and the owner had some to
recognize them.
“So how was your week?” Kait asked sitting across from
Jonathan.
“The same except my mom called after we got off the
phone yesterday…”
“Oh?” Kait could recognize when Jonathan wasn’t
totally sure about what he was going to say, and this was one of those times.
“I’m sure Gail will tell you today, but I guess her
and my mom are planning on us all having Thanksgiving
together.”
“What?”
“That was my reaction but I guess they got to talking
about who was going to have dinner with who, and Gail came up with the idea of
us all having dinner together, kind of like “one big happy family;” as my
mother put it.” Jonathan paused
again. Kait was accustomed to having to
pull information out of him, but this was different. He normally was strait forward, but today he
seemed to be skirting around what he really wanted to say.
“And…” Kait
prompted him to continue.
“And the three months are up this week.” Kait didn’t need to be reminded, she had been
sort of dreading this conversation, “I was thinking sense our moms have gone to
the trouble of planning this Thanksgiving dinner that we might extend out relationship
until the end of Thanksgiving break.”
Jonathan finished and just sat there looking at Kait expectantly.
Kait wasn’t sure what to say, “Okay.”
“Okay?”
Jonathan repeated dumbfounded.
“As in: okay, that sounds good to me. It’s not like another two weeks is going to
kill us,” Kait explained slightly sarcastically.
Jonathan gave her one of his trade-mark smirks and
picked up a menu. “Then that’s set. Now on to the next…food, I swear if I don’t
eat something soon my stomach is going to revolt.”
Kait laughed and picked up her menu also, leave it to
Jonathan to lighten the mood.
*******
Thanksgiving came and everyone one gathered at Kait’s parent’s house for dinner. Everything felt so natural and comfortable
that is seemed as if they had always had Thanksgiving together.

Kait found a comfortable place in the log and looked
out into the harbor. Everything was so
peaceful, she was the only one on the beach that day, and even the seagulls
seemed to be keeping away. A cool
November wind blew her hair in front of her face. She shivered, she really want’s
dressed warm enough to be out on the beach, but she had needed the solitude and
peace.
Tomorrow she was heading back to school after
Thanksgiving break and that would signal the end of her “relationship” with
Jonathan; only, she didn’t want it to end.
Over the months they had grown to be such close friends, much closer
than they had been after 18 years of growing up together. She had grown accustomed to him calling her
at random times during he day, and recently they had started calling each other every night to say goodnight and
to just talk.
Dejectedly she sighed, Well here’s to the end of a ‘great’ relationship. At least I know that my heart wont’ be broken
in my first “break-up.” Tired of thinking
Kait just leaned back and closed her eyes.
The sun was warm but the wind was cold enough to drive away any warmth
the sun offered.
“Is this a private party, or can anyone join?” Kait gave a
little jump at the sound of Jonathan’s voice, she hadn’t
heard him approaching. He had the
uncanny knack of being able to catch her unaware, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to
startle you," Jonathan apologized as he took a
seat next to her on the log.
“How did you know I was here?” Kait asked, turning her head to look at
him. Jonathan caught her glance and held
it. Kait
has very odd eyes. They aren’t quiet
brown but they defiantly aren’t blue, they do have flecks of green and gray in
them though. They breeze came up
again blowing hair in Kait’s face once more. Her hair
has grown longer. I’m not sure weather I
like her hair long or short. The short
defiantly has more spunk to it, but her long hear was always beautiful. Hmmm…she doesn’t look away any more, I wonder
when that happened, she always used to shy away from anyone look at her too
long.
“I just kinda guessed. So you heading back to school tomorrow?” Jonathan asked looking out at the gray water
stretching before them.
“Yep, classes start up on Monday. You?”
“Same here.” There was a
short pause. “This week has gone by
really fast hasn’t it?” Jonathan knew he
had to ask her soon. All week he had
been waiting for just the right moment but it never seemed to present it’s
self. So now was a good time as any.
“Yes, it was really nice to have everyone together. It felt like old times when we would get
together every Sunday and watch X-files.”
Kait smiled remembering those times.
“Those were fun times.
You know I was thinking there are a ton of dances and parties come up
and there really aren’t any girls that I’ve met at school that I would really
want to take, and we’ve been having fun these past few months,” Jonathan kept
stumbling over his words. “Geshe, what I’m trying to say is: do you want to just stay
together through Christmas. I know my
mom would be really bummed if we broke up right before Christmas.”
Kait smiled, she thought it was kind of cute when
Jonathan stumbled around his words. She
had come to recognize it was being a sign that he was nervous. “That sounds good to me. I was thinking kind of the same thing because
there are a few dances come up at my school and I was wondering what I was
going to do for a date.” Just then a
strong breeze blew by causing Kait to shiver.
“Here.”
Jonathan slid his coat off and set it on her shoulders.
“But you’ll freeze,” Kait protested.
“You already are,” Jonathan countered.
“I’m not the one in only a t-shirt now put your coat
back on before I have to do it fore you.”
Kait said attempting to sound threatening.
“Oooo, is that a threat?”
“No, it’s a promise.”
“Okay this isn’t getting us anywhere. Neither of us is going to give in,” Jonathan
said laughing. “So how
about a compromise?”
“And what would that be?”
“This,” Jonathan slid down until he was sitting on the
sand with his back against the log. Then
he grabbed Kait around the waist and pulled her into his lap.
Kait gave a startled cry as she fell into hid
lap. Now
this is the last thing I expected him to do, not that I’m complaining though. All hope of thought went right out the widow
when he rapped his coat around the both of them and locked his arms in the
front to keep it closed.
“Warm?” Jonathan’s breathe tickled right behind her
ear.
“Very,” Kait figured she might as well take advantage
of the situation while she still could, and snuggled further down into his coat
and rested her head against his chest.
“Oh, I’m sorry.
I didn’t know I was interrupting anything,” A voice, that Kait had now
come to recognize, said from behind them.
“That’s okay Luke.
What’s up Luke?” Jonathan asked
turning to look at his friend but making no move to let go of Kait.
“Oh, nothing. I was in the
neighborhood and I stopped by to see if you wanted to do anything and your mom
told me you were down here taking a walk.
But I guess she was misinformed.”
Luke joked taking a seat on the log just above them.
“What did you have in mind?” Jonathan asked only lightly interested.
Luke didn’t seam to notice. “Well there is this new club opening up, and
I was wondering if you wanted to check it out with me.”
“Sounds like of fun. What time?”
“Around 10.”
“You doing anything
tonight?” Jonathan asked Kait.
“I didn’t have anything planned.”
“Good, then I’ll pick you up around
